SMALLWOOD ‘DEFLATED’ AFTER DRAW

Richie Smallwood admitted today’s performance was not good enough, as the Bantams drew 1-1 with Grimsby Town.

Smallwood converted a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point for City, after a battling performance in what was a scrappy encounter.

But the City captain felt his side should have done better, as they left Blundell Park with a share of the spoils.

“I feel a bit deflated, really,” he said.

“We need wins at this stage of the season. We gave it our all but could not quite get the winner in the end.

“It was a very tight game, and the defenders did well for large spells.

“It must be a record for the number of long throw-ins delivered into our box in a game.

“We can obviously do better overall.”

Smallwood discussed where he feels the Bantams need to improve heading into the final five games of the 2023/24 campaign.

“We need to improve our quality and decision making on the ball,” he added.

“We need to keep being good at the basics; win more first and second balls, and show our quality in the final third.

“Today, there was no rhythm or routine in the game. It was very stop-start.

“Hopefully, on Saturday, we can be a bit more free flowing and that will suit us.”
