CLAYTON READY FOR ‘SIX POINTER’

20 January 2023

The Bantams’ newest arrival, Adam Clayton, is relishing tomorrow's encounter against fellow play-off outfit Carlisle United, and insists it would be vital “to take points off them”.

Clayton, who signed for City on Thursday, believes he and his team-mates have to match the Cumbrians' energy in midfield, if they are to have any chance of leapfrogging their opponents on Saturday afternoon.

The 34-year-old also hopes to bring experience and know-how to the club, and confesses he “just wants to help the team succeed”.

Clayton said: “Saturday is massive. Carlisle are around us in the table, and it will be huge if we can win.

“It will be crucial to take points off them. It is a six pointer.

“Only recently, Doncaster beat them, so hopefully we can do the same. We know the game is there for the taking.

“They are a strong and aggressive side, so if we can match that energy and win that midfield battle, we will have a good chance of winning.

“I want to bring experience, know-how and energy to this squad. A new face and voice can keep the standards going.

“I will play my game to the best of my ability, but I just want to help the team and succeed here. It is what you are in this business for, and I am here to do the same.

“I would not say I have point to prove, in terms of how I left Doncaster, but I will always try and show what I can do.

“I am nowhere near the end of my time in the game. I am enjoying my football and I cannot wait to show what I am capable of here.”

The central-midfielder is excited to work with Mark Hughes again, after the pair spent a brief period of time together at Manchester City, and hopes his passing strengths can yield successful results in a "tough league".

The former Doncaster man is also looking forward to the prospect of playing in front of huge crowds at the University of Bradford Stadium, and admits he cannot wait for Saturday.

“The gaffer’s style definitely suits my game,” Clayton added.

“Passing is my strong point, and I always look to get on the ball.

“This is the hardest league to control a game in, because of the erratic nature. Opponents are in your face a lot of the time, so it can be difficult to dictate, but that is something I try to negate.

“This is a very good dressing room to be a part of. There are some great players in there, so I hope I can add to what is already here.

“I have good memories of this stadium. I have played here a few times, but also experienced it in the stands.

“It is a fantastic ground, and when it gets going, it is one of the best. I just want to get out there and experience that for Bradford City.

“I am used to playing in front of big crowds. I have experienced pressurised environments before, and I am relishing doing the same here, starting on Saturday.”
