HUGHES HAILS ’STRAIGHTFORWARD’ VICTORY

Mark Hughes praised his Bantams' game management following a “straightforward” victory over Tranmere Rovers at the University of Bradford Stadium.

The City boss was delighted with how his side saw out Tranmere’s late threat, and how City remained patient in possession, picking their moments to attack effectively.

“We are all delighted. It was a pretty straightforward victory,” he said.

“I thought we managed the game really well. We got the goals and saw it out quite comfortably.

“We had to be patient at times. They had players behind the ball, and did not press us, so we had to draw them out.

“When we did pull them out of position, we did it to great effect.

“I am pleased with our performance. We followed the victory against Stevenage with a professional and hard-fought showing.

“It is going to be difficult on occasions, but we always look for a way. If we just give up possession, that is when teams have joy and encouragement.

“Tranmere did not threaten much, which shows the level of our performance.

“It is all about controlling the game, and taking it from the opposition.”

The Welshman was satisfied with City’s endeavour and control over last night’s visitors, and felt they were duly rewarded for their effort.

Hughes believed victory over Tranmere, who had in turn overcame challenges against some of the league's top teams, will give his side confidence as they return home against Barrow on Saturday.

He added: “The second goal is always important, as it calms us down and makes it very difficult for the opposition to stage a comeback.

“They know if they over-commit, then it will be easier for us to pick them off.

“It added to how well we did, in how we dominated them. We did not concede a shot on target, or a corner, so I am happy with our effort.

“Tranmere are a good team. They have beaten top of the league, and other teams around us, so to control them as we did will give us so much confidence.

“It was a game I was worried about, but thankfully, there was no need to be.

“We got the job done, now the focus is on Saturday.”
