HUGHES: 'WE CAN STILL BE BRAVER'

Mark Hughes feels his side will still continue to improve, after this afternoon's 2-1 victory over Walsall extended their unbeaten run to three games.

Hughes’ men netted twice within four minutes towards the end of the first half, after soaking up pressure from the Saddlers, to secure all three points.

The City boss spoke of his side needing to maintain standards and organisation in their play, taking their work from the training field onto the pitch.

He said: “Too often, we were sucked into playing a different type of game which we do not usually play.

“On occasions, we did not handle the balls Walsall continued to put into our box, and we needed to be braver in possession.

“At times, it felt like we decided to take the easy option, and that was why the momentum began to shift in Walsall’s favour.

“Performance wise, we were not where we needed to be, and we know we can do better than we did.

“When we do what we discuss in training, we cause our opposition a lot of problems, regardless of their formation or intensity. Our first goal proved that, and we just needed to do it on more occasions today.

“We had many chances and, if we were more clinical, particularly in the final stages of the game, we could have taken a lot of pressure off ourselves.

“In the end, we got the job done, so as a team we are pleased.”

Hughes made changes to his starting 11, praising the impact of Dion Pereira, Tyreik Wright, Yann Songo’o and Vadaine Oliver, who were all introduced from the bench.

The Bantams boss is pleased with his squad's depth, following Deadline Day additions, and is looking forward to seeing more from his side.

He added: “I thought Tyreik and Dion were effective, as were Vadaine and Yann when they came on.

“It shows the depth of the squad we have, which is a massive help when you are under pressure as a team from the opposition.

“The most important thing is another three points on the board. We got the job done so we are pleased. It is vital that we continue to pick up points to remain competitive.

“We have got a little break now with no midweek game, but looking ahead to September, there will be a few tough matches for us against physical teams which will be a good opportunity to assess ourselves.”
