HUGHES LOOKING TO MAINTAIN AWAY FORM

Mark Hughes is anticipating a tough challenge against Grimsby Town on Saturday, as the Bantams look to extend their winning run away from home to five matches in Sky Bet League Two.

The Mariners are currently two points behind City, but Hughes hopes his side can use their recent confidence from away victories, seen most recently at Salford, to leave Blundell Park with another three points.

“Grimsby are doing really well,” Hughes said.

“They are on the back of a good run, but our record away from home is really good and I hope it continues on Saturday.

“The league is very competitive at the minute, so it would be very positive to pick up three points. We need to bridge a gap between ourselves and the teams below us.

“It does not matter what level you play at, away wins are hard to come by. It is unrealistic to think you can dominate every away game but, for the most part, we have been dominant.

“We can regain control well, away from home. When we are not where we need to be as a group, we dig in and see out the periods of pressure. We are getting better at that.”

Using Matty Foulds and Ryan East as examples, Hughes again praised the depth his squad has, and the attitude and eagerness of players to take their chances on the field, when handed match minutes.

The Welshman values desire and work ethic in the team, and insists it helps the whole squad when players are ready to step up.

He added: “Fouldsy is playing exceptionally well. There is a difference in his work from last year.

“He looks stronger and has a good presence on the pitch. Sometimes, towards the end of last year, he did not impose himself as much as he is now, but now he knows he can affect the opposition and is instrumental to the team.

“That is credit to the boys out of the team. They engage in what we are doing even if they are not in the matchday squad.

“They are always ready because they know the circumstances could change and they will be required.

“Matty has come in, and Ryan East came in on Saturday and had a very good game.

“The players have a great understanding and are embracing how we want to play. It helps us get better as a group, which is great for everyone.”
