BANKS’ STUNNER SEALS SUTTON VICTORY

12 November 2022

Mark Hughes’ Bantams extended their unbeaten run away from home to seven matches, running out 2-0 winners over Sutton United at the VBS Community Stadium.

Andy Cook’s first-half strike was followed by a sensational effort from Scott Banks after the break to seal back-to-back wins for City.

On a sunny afternoon at Gander Green Lane, both sides started with chances to edge in front.

Alex Gilliead’s inviting ball on the 15th minute was only cleared as far as Richie Smallwood, who was arriving on the edge of the box, but the skipper’s effort spun marginally over.

The hosts grew into the half and tested Harry Lewis just after the half-hour mark when Will Randall saw his 20-yard effort well stopped by Harry Lewis.

The Bantams responded, however, to the Us pressure and took the lead just before the 40th minute, with Cook's 15th of the season.

City won the ball back high up the field with Abo Eisa cutting inside to open up for a shot.

His deflected effort fell into the path of Cook, who helped the ball on past Jack Rose and into the bottom-right corner, to put his side in front.

Hughes’ side pressed for a second before the end of the first half, as good link-up play between Cook and Harry Chapman found City’s No.20 one-on-one with Rose, but he agonisingly watched his lob hooked off the line to keep the advantage to a single goal heading into the break.

It was not long into the second half, though, that City deservedly doubled their advantage in style.

A short corner found Banks on the edge of the area, who drifted inside and delightfully curled an effort into the top-left corner to send the 755 travelling supporters into raptures.

City controlled the remainder of the game comfortably to secure successive wins away from home, and at the VBS Community Stadium.

The win at Gander Green Lane pushes the Bantams two points behind their next opponents - third-placed Northampton Town.
