VERNAM: ‘IT WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH’

9 January 2022

Returning Charles Vernam insisted the Bantams were “not good enough”, following yesterday's 2-0 defeat to Carlisle United.

The 25-year-old appeared for City for the first time since November 23, when coming as a substitute with just under half an hour played to replace the injured Andy Cook.

While Vernam believes Derek Adams' side began the game brightly, he admitted they did not deserve anything from the game given the way they played after conceding.

He said: “It was a strong start to the game, and we did well in that first period, but ultimately after that it was not good enough.

“After we conceded the goal, we were not good enough and, in the second half especially, we needed to do better.

“Previously, even when things have gone against us, we have come back into games whether that would be to draw or win.

“We understand the fans' frustration because they come here to see us put in a performance.

“You can lose games, but to lose them in that way is frustrating and it is as disappointing as much to us as it is to them.

“For us, it is about picking ourselves up, dusting ourselves down and going again.”

The winger also touched on making his return from injury.

However, despite being happy to get back out on the pitch for the first time in nearly two months, Vernam was eager to not use that as an excuse for a below-par display.

He added: “Of course, I was happy to be back out there but I fall into the same category as everyone else.

“Just because I have come back from injury, it does not mean I have done enough.

“I was disappointed with my own performance as I am sure other players were as well.

“It is down to us as a group of players to make sure it does not happen again, because it was not good enough.

“It is about the 11 players who are out there making sure that when we concede, we pick ourselves up because we have been good at that throughout the season.

“We go again next week and being at home is a huge advantage for us because our supporters always back us in numbers.

“You saw today, over a 1,000 fans coming up here, which was amazing, and we need to make sure we start repaying them.”
