BANTAMS FALL TO HARROGATE DEFEAT

22 February 2022

The Bantams fell to defeat at the Utilita Energy Stadium, losing 3-1 to Harrogate Town.

Despite Matty Foulds putting the hosts in front early on with a sublime strike, the Sulphurites hit back with three goals of their own to ensure they left West Yorkshire with all three points.

After a strong start, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock 12 minutes in when the ball fell to Foulds on the edge of the 18-yard box.

On his return to the side, the defender rifled his left-footed effort into the bottom corner from distance, to net his first goal for the club.

City went close to doubling their advantage when Alex Gilliead cut inside and struck goalwards, however it was denied by the inspired Mark Oxley.

Mark Trueman’s side continued to put pressure on the visiting goal when the ball fell to Levi Sutton who struck an audacious half-volley, which once again had to be kept out by Oxley.

Simon Weaver’s side nearly found a leveller out of nowhere when George Thomson’s cross towards the far post just eluded Ryan Fallowfield and went behind for a goal-kick.

The visitors did however net an equaliser on the stroke of half-time when Lewis Page’s inswinging corner was headed into the bottom corner by Warren Burrell, who tied the affair heading into the break.

City began the second half brightly and went close when Watt’s dangerous free-kick missed everyone and forced Oxley to make a save.

The Bantams threatened again when a cross from the right-hand side found Andy Cook, whose looping header landed on the roof of the net.

Despite City's best effort to net a second, the visitors hit the front when Lewis Page stepped up and send a superb free-kick flying into the top corner of the net.

The home team went close to getting back on level terms when Gilliead’s close-range header had to be pushed out by Oxley.

City continued their push for an equaliser when Oxley kept out Gilliead's effort and then Paudie O’Connor headed the resulting corner just over the crossbar.

In the Bantams' attempts to draw level, the away side wrapped up the three points in the closing stages.

A swift counter-attack ended with Brahima Diarra playing in Jack Diamond who slotted beyond Bass to condemn the Bantams to defeat.
