Charles Vernam is looking forward to testing himself against another promotion-chasing side in Tranmere Rovers, ahead of tomorrow afternoon's clash.

Vernam made his return to first-team football in City’s home fixture against Port Vale, scoring just minutes after coming off the bench.

The winger has featured in the last four matches, all of which have come against teams residing in the top seven, and looked ahead to the Good Friday encounter as a further test for him and his team-mates.

He said: “It is a positive for us to play against them because we can compare ourselves to them.

“They are all challenges at the top of the table, but it is about us concentrating on what we are working on.

“We want to challenge ourselves against the best teams in the league.

“It is a good opportunity for us to show what we can do as a group in the next five games.”

Vernam’s injury against Crawley Town in January saw him miss over two months of action and was thankful for Mark Hughes’ patience in returning him to the fold.

The 25-year-old has yet to start a Sky Bet League Two game under the Welshman, but is hopeful of making the XI sooner rather than later.

He added: “I think it would have been very easy to throw me in for 90 minutes after the Newport game.

“I think I might have had to previously, but it has worked out really well.

“The gaffer knows what he needs to see from me and he knows what I can offer.

“I am incredibly grateful to the staff for not rushing me back. Coming back into the team, I feel like I have come back in the best shape possible.”
