HUGHES EXPECTING CITY RESPONSE

Mark Hughes is expecting a response from his side - against bottom of the league Scunthorpe United - tomorrow at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

City came away from Colchester on Easter Monday on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat.

While clarifying they would not underestimate their opponents, Hughes called for his side to draw confidence from their last performance at Valley Parade against Tranmere Rovers on Good Friday.

He said: “We are at home and up against a team who has had a difficult season. We have still got more to play for and need to make sure we get a positive result.

“I would expect us to show a response to Monday's defeat and hopefully win this game.

“That is sometimes not always the case, but I do not anticipate us losing if we do our jobs right and correctly.

“I sensed we slipped up badly against Colchester last time out, and we do not want that to happen again.

“We will not underestimate them. It is not an easy game but I do expect us to go for the win.”

Hughes will have Elliot Watt at his disposal again, with the midfielder returning from suspension at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

The City chief heaped praise on the midfielder, and lauded the impact he has had since he took over.

He added: “Elliot’s done really well since coming in. His impact on the team has grown in terms of his influence when he plays and when he links the play.

“When we circulate the ball, it all goes through him. He has really grasped that role and understands what we want from him.

“We need some more guys within the group who are vocal.

“We have some who are quiet on the pitch and we need more in the group who can understand what is happening on the pitch and have the ability to recognise and act accordingly.”
