Mark Hughes was delighted with his side’s performance and eventual result, after City’s 4-1 victory over promotion-chasing Sutton United.

Three second-half goals saw the Bantams put the U’s to the sword, and Hughes believes it was a signal of intent from the West Yorkshire side.

The 58-year-old was proud of City’s will to win despite having little to play for, against a team fighting for their place in the play-offs.

He said: “I am delighted. I thought the performance was really good.

“It is a difficult place to come. They have got ambitions of getting themselves out of the division.

“You can see how they get results here. They play very direct football, and their goalkeeper is their biggest threat.

“Everybody saw that we were prepared for what happened today.”

Hughes made sure to praise the unity of his squad after their penultimate game of the season, with his substitutes making their mark.

Andy Cook’s late goal was the headline contribution from the changes, but the Welshman suggested all three of their impacts spoke volumes about the team togethernes.

He added: “I was really pleased with the impact of the substitutes, because I think it shows they were ready to play a part.

“They were engaged in the game. If you are not engaged and not watching intently, when you do go on you will not make an impact.

“To a man, they all performed really well, and I think it shows how tightly knit they are as a group.”
