OPPOSITION GUIDE: BRISTOL ROVERS

15 October 2021

The Bantams will be looking to make it back-to-back wins at the Utilita Energy Stadium this Saturday when they welcome Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League Two.

The Gas have drawn only one game so far this season, winning four and losing six, while no side outside of the relegation zone has conceded more than the Pirates so far.

We have put together an Opposition Guide to give you all the information you need to know about our 12th opponent of the season.

The Pirates utilised the transfer window heavily this summer, with the club letting go of 22 players and bringing in 17 fresh faces - including former Premier League midfielder Glenn Whelan.

ONES TO WATCH

Leon Clarke

Former Wolves and Sheffield United striker Leon Clarke joined the Pirates in summer and has scored once in two appearances.

Clarke's move to Bristol Rovers was the 23rd of his career, and the 36-year-old still knows where the back of the net is - scoring the winner on his debut for the club against Crawley Town.

Paul Coutts

Another summer signing, Coutts has spent the majority of his career at Championship level.

The 33-year-old is best known for a right foot which has earnt him plaudits for his range of passing and set-pieces.

Coutts joined the Gas to re-join former manager Joey Barton, and has made seven league appearances under him this season.

Brett Pitman

Former Bournemouth man Pitman has made seven appearances for Bristol Rovers this season, netting once.

The frontman scored 101 goals for the Cherries across three appearances and joined the Pirates on a free transfer from Swindon, after scoring 11 goals in 37 appearances.

CAPTAIN

Paul Coutts captains the Gas despite only joining the club this summer.

Following the departure of former captains Max Ehmer and Luke Leahy, new manager Joey Barton had to elect his on-field leader at the start of the season.

The veteran midfielder’s previous experience with manager Barton accelerated his seniority in the squad and he now captains his new side.

MANAGER

Former Newcastle, Manchester City and QPR midfielder Joey Barton is the man in charge at the Memorial Stadium.

Barton took the managerial post at the Gas in February this year, with the side languishing in the relegation zone of Sky Bet League One.
