A hat-trick from Tom Heardman, plus a goal from Luke Charman and a second half double from substitute Yasin Ben Elmahanni, helped the Magpies to a resounding 6-0 victory over the Bantams in the Group 1 - Northern fixture.
City's youthful side for the second-string encounter included pros Joe Cracknell, James King, Daniel Devine, Reece Webb-Foster and Ellis Hudson. The rest of the Bantams' starting XI and bench were made up of club apprentices
Former Bantams loanee Curtis Good was named in Newcastle's line up. The Australian was part of the famous City 'history-makers' squad that made it to the League Cup Final back in 2013.
Cracknell made two bright stops early into the contest to deny Heardman and Charman in separate attacks but he couldn't prevent the visitors, who led on the day by former England striker Peter Beardsley, from taking the lead sixteen minutes in.
Team-mate Dan Barlaser played Heardman through on goal with a well-placed pass and the imposing Newcastle frontman calmly slotted home for his first of the afternoon.
A threatening run from Hudson minutes later forced a corner for City, but a watchful King had to be on hand to make a vital blocked tackle up at the other end shortly afterwards to repel a Charman shot from inside the box.
Charman did get himself on the score-sheet just after the half hour mark, however, when he finished neatly from just inside box after Heardman had flicked Jack Hunter's flighted pass from deep into his path.
Webb-Foster tried to muster a response for the Bantams but his effort from outside the area was comfortably held by Magpies shot-stopper Rob Elliot.
The visitors continued to create chances as the half drew to a close, and Alex Laird had to be on hand to make a smart diving block with his legs to repel Jamie Holmes' shot after the winger had turned into shooting space deep inside the box.
Looking for a way back into the contest, City actually started the second period in fairly positive fashion.
Devine forced a decent save from Elliot after a driving run and shot from just outside the box, while half time substitute Casey Taglione fired straight at the experienced Newcastle custodian from Kwame Boateng's low cross soon after.
Newcastle quickly had chances of their own as the half progressed though.
Heardman saw a shot deflected over via the outstretched leg of King after the striker was picked out in space inside the box.
Cracknell was then called upon to push a shot away from Barlaser after Newcastle had worked the resulting corner short.
The Magpies managed to add a third from their next corner routine roughly fifteen minutes after the restart, sub Ben Elmahanni curling home after being picked out in the box.
Taglione had the ball in the net for City later in the half after latching onto Alex Laird's through-ball but the striker was flagged for offside.
As City still maintained their push to try and get something from the game, Hudson fired wide with a low drive from outside the box a couple of minutes afterwards.
Despite the Bantams' best attempts though, Newcastle remained a big threat going forward, and they nearly increased their lead further when second half replacement Dan Ward side-footed wide from Adam Wilson's cross into the box.
The Magpies were able to net a fourth fourteen minutes from the end when Heardman was on hand to fire home from close range after Cracknell had produced a smart stop following a shot by Sean Longstaff.
Cracknell denied Heardman with a brave block from close up soon after, but the Newcastle forward managed to complete his hat-trick shortly afterwards when Longstaff squared for him to tap into an unguarded goal.
Ben Elmahanni finished off the scoring with time running out in the game when the attacker finished well with a fine finish into the far bottom corner from inside the area.
After already grabbing a treble in the game, Heardman went close again in the final minutes of the match when he hit the post after Longstaff's forward pass had found him in space in the box.
