Stuart McCall's Bantams picked up their first point of the new 2016/2017 campaign after a dominant display over Port Vale at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

In McCall's first competitive game back in charge, City controlled their opening day contest for long periods and could easily have took the lead in a energetic first half performance.

Former City loanee 'keeper Jak Alnwick tipped an early Billy Clarke effort onto the crossbar, while Nathaniel Knight-Percival - one of five debutants on show for City - saw a shot kicked off the line later in the half.

Nicky Law and James Hanson also went close during the opening period.

With Nathan Clarke and Timothee Dieng out due to minor calf injuries, Knight-Percival was joined at centre half by Frenchman Romain Vincelot.

Dieng and Vincelot's places in central midfield were taken by Law and young pro Daniel Devine, who was handed his first action in senior football by McCall.

The Bantams continued to force the pace after the break but goal-scoring opportunities proved harder to come by.

Hanson looked to get on the end of a number of crosses from Mark Marshall and Filipe Morais - both of whom played with real purpose on the wings - but McCall's men couldn't find a breakthrough.

Vale nearly struck late on through substitutes Christopher Mbamba and Quentin Pereira to snatch a barely-deserved three points but both fired wide with efforts from inside the box.
