Accrington Stanley win 11-10 on penalties

Attendance 1,936 (988 visitors)

The Bantams were defeated in the first round of this season's EFL Cup by Accrington Stanley in a mammoth penalty shoot-out following an action-packed tie with the League Two side at the Wham Stadium.

Stanley's Jordan Clark scored the winning penalty to register an 11-10 shoot-out win for the hosts after Reece Webb-Foster had fired over with his spot-kick.

Nicky Law had a chance to win it for City earlier in the penalty contest but he too fired over with his kick.

In the match itself, Stuart McCall's Bantams created a whole host of chances to win it but they couldn't quite find a way to break through and make the vital opening.

In the opening period, Jordy Hiwula was denied by a fine save from Accrington 'keeper Elliot Parish, while Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Law both fired over from close range later in the half.

Clark clipped the top of the bar for Accrington with a volley after the break but City continued to dominate proceedings in the tie.

City substitutes Mark Marshall and Filipe Morais were both denied by saves from Parish, before the Accrington 'keeper was given a straight red card in 73rd minute for catching Tony McMahon just outside the box when the defender was through on goal.

Marshall forced replacement custodian Aaron Chapman into two fine saves after his introduction from the bench, his first save actually tipping an effort from the City winger onto the post.

Marshall had a chance to snatch a winner for the Bantams at the very end of normal time but he volleyed over from close range after Morais' cross towards the far post.

Accrington could have easily scored themselves at the start of extra time, however, when Romain Vincelot was penalised for tugging down Mark Hughes in the box from an Accrington corner.

John O'Sullivan stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick but Colin Doyle guessed correctly and saved to his left.

City's best chance in extra time arguably came in the second period when a short corner routine saw a shot by Daniel Devine blocked from close range following McMahon's cross into the box. The ball broke free to Vincelot just inside the box and he crashed in a first-time drive that rattled Chapman's far post.

With the tie now into a penalty shoot-out, City were given an early advantage when Hughes fired over with Stanley's first kick.

Law's missed penalty took the shoot-out into sudden death, with both goalkeepers taking and scoring a kick each.

By 9-9 penalties apiece, both sides had to go around again. McMahon and Hughes netted for their respective sides to make it thirteen straight penalties scored but Webb-Foster, who had scored earlier in the shoot-out, could only fire over the bar with his second effort.

That gave Clark the opportunity to win it for Stanley and the attacker made no mistake by sending Doyle the wrong way to book Accrington's place in round two.
