CLUB TO HOST ANNUAL MEMORIAL FIXTURE

4 May 2022

Bradford City AFC will host its annual memorial fixture - marking the 37th anniversary of the Valley Parade Fire Disaster - this Saturday, when Carlisle United visit the Utilita Energy Stadium.

Action on May 7 will get underway from 3.00pm, in what is City’s final outing of the Sky Bet League Two season.

And, with supporters in attendance for the campaign’s conclusion, for the first time since 2019, everyone at the club will collectively pause to remember those affected by the tragedy.

On 11th May 1985, 56 supporters lost their lives and hundreds more were left with life-changing injuries, as the Bantams welcomed Lincoln City to West Yorkshire in a Third Division encounter.

This Saturday, as both the City and Carlisle sides take to the field, a rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ will be played, as both club captains lay wreaths on the field.

A minute’s silence will be observed - having been introduced by club chaplain Pastor Oliver Evans - with players stood around the club’s giant flag which pays tribute to the 56 lives lost.

At the half-time interval, Georgia Thornton from the Bradford City Ribbons appeal will be welcomed onto the field, to speak with club pitch announcer Darren Harper about her continued work in raising money for Bradford’s Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU).

Throughout the day, buckets will be carried around the Utilita Energy Stadium and inside concourses, collecting donations for the appeal which was launched in the wake of the disaster.
