Goal-scorer Gareth Evans praised a 'professional' performance, as a clinical display saw City beat Southend United 3-1 at Roots Hall.

The midfielder bagged a brace as the Bantams recorded their first league double of the season - over the Shrimpers.

Evans expressed his delight at having returned to winning ways, and was pleased with how he and his team-mates came forward.

He said: “We managed to kick into gear and were very effective in an attacking sense. The conditions were difficult, but we put in a professional performance.

“We felt we did not get our rewards against Cambridge - as we probably deserved to get three points - which we certainly made up for.

“I thought we created numerous opportunities in what were difficult circumstances. The pitch, the wind and the rain made it difficult for us, but we still got the job done.”

After coming within inches of scoring a would-be winner at Cambridge United on Saturday, Evans confessed his relief at having opened his second account in claret and amber.

He is looking forward to further continuing to make a positive impact in the side, now back to full fitness and enjoying game time.

He added: “I was obviously happy on a personal level to get two goals. I felt I should have had one on Saturday, and it is fair to say it is overdue since I signed.

“I have had a difficult time with injuries and postponements. Everything has just been thrown in front of me a little bit.

“To get on the scoresheet was pleasing and I would like to think I will get a few more - between now and the end of the season.

“It was a nice confidence boost, but it is something I always felt I have had throughout my career. If I play regularly and stay fit, I will get chances and put my fair share away.

“I always felt like I was going to get back, and you have to believe you are going to return and score some more goals. Hopefully this is the start of something.”

Evans and his team-mates are back in action at home to Barrow this Saturday (January 30).
