OPPOSITION GUIDE: EXETER CITY

13 November 2020

City return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Exeter City at the Utilita Energy Stadium (3.00pm).

The Devon club has narrowly missed out on promotion on several occasions in recent times, losing in three of the past four Sky Bet League Two Play-Off Finals.

The Grecians lost last season's Wembley final 4-0 to Northampton Town, though have made another strong start to their league campaign this time around.

We have created an Opposition Guide to take you through Saturday’s visitors.

TRANSFER ACTIVITY

Matt Taylor made four new additions to his squad over the summer, with a further 11 players heading in the opposite direction.

INS: Jake Caprice (Tranmere Rovers), Rory McArdle (Scunthorpe United), Lewis Page (Charlton Athletic), Jökull Andrésson (Reading).

OUTS: Gary Warren (Torquay United), Lee Martin (Ebbsfleet United), Craig Woodman (Tiverton Town), Brennan Dickenson (Carlisle United), Jared Thompson (Brentford), Dean Moxey (Torquay United), Louis Morison (Tiverton Town, loan), Noah Smerdon (Chippenham Town, loan), Jordan Dyer (Chippenham Town, loan), Cheick Diabate (Tiverton Town, loan), Lewis Wilson (Bideford, loan).

ONES TO WATCH

Ryan Bowman

The experienced striker has a keen eye for goal after bagging 15 goals and six match winners in 47 appearances for Exeter last season.

Bowman signed for the Grecians from Motherwell in January 2019, and has also represented the likes of York City, Torquay and Gateshead.

Joel Randall

Joel Randall is the Grecians' top scorer this season - having netted five goals in 13 games - and, as a product of the Exeter academy, is now a regular in the starting line-up.

The young midfielder broke into the first team in a Papa John's Trophy match against Chelsea under-21s in the 2018/19 season.

Nicky Law

A familiar face at the Utilita Energy Stadium, Law scored 10 goals in 44 appearances in his first season at the Grecians, having spent two separate spells in West Yorkshire.

Law has played as high up as the Premier League, making several appearances for Sheffield United with his time at the Blades from 2005 until 2009.

THE CAPTAIN

Jake Taylor has proved a fan favourite at Exeter since rejoining the club in 2016.

The experienced midfielder has just surpassed 250 appearances for the Devon club. Last season he played 43 games, netting three times.

This is Taylor’s second stint at the Grecians after joining the club on loan from Reading in the 2011/12 season.

He has also made appearances for Aldershot, Cheltenham, Crawley, Leyton Orient and Motherwell.

THE MANAGER

Aged 38, Matt Taylor remains one of the youngest managers in Sky Bet League Two, aged 38.

The former defender was appointed first-team manager in 2018 and has come close to promotion back to League One, a feat he achieved as a player with the Grecians in 2008.

Taylor worked as Exeter’s under-23’s head coach for two seasons before taking over from Paul Tisdale after an impressive Premier League Cup campaign.
