Callum Cooke was delighted to have netted his first goal in City colours - after helping his side to a 3-0 victory over Southend United.

The midfielder opened the scoring for Stuart McCall’s men just five minutes into the Utilita Energy Stadium contest, as the Bantams returned to winning ways.

Cooke described a feeling of relief at having got on the scoresheet and contributed towards the Bantams' fast start against their Essex visitors.

He said: “I have been saying for weeks that I have been dying to get on the scoresheet.

“Thankfully, I did that and the floodgates can hopefully now open for me.

“I have been getting chances all season and just have not been able to take them up until now.

“My goal was probably one of the hardest chances I have had, but I ended up taking it.

“That is football. Sometimes you miss the easy ones and score the harder ones, but hopefully I can build on that.

“It always helps when there are goals coming from all over the field. I want to be playing higher up and contributing to goals as well.

“We knew we had to come out of the blocks sharp and we have been saying that for a while, now.

“It is nice to score first. It gives us something to not only hold onto but also to build upon as well.”

After ending a run of three-straight defeats, the former Peterborough United midfielder hopes the Bantams can now put a winning run of their own together.

Cooke believes this victory can be the start of a more positive spell for McCall’s men, and was pleased with a performance which signified a “fresh start”.

The 23-year-old added: “I thought the team was fantastic. We scored three good goals.

“We were coming off the back of three bad results, and were bitterly disappointed with that.

“Like the gaffer said in training, it is a new week and a fresh start.

"We can only beat who is put out in front of us, but we scored three goals, got the three points and put in a good all-round performance.

“All the boys were brilliant and wins give you confidence, so hopefully we can back that up on Saturday and finish off a good week.

“We will go away and look at the positives, because it was a good night, all around.”

Cooke and his team-mates begin their Emirates FA Cup campaign away to Tonbridge Angels on Saturday (12.30pm). The game will be broadcast live across BBC and BT Sport’s digital channels.
