CITY EXIT EMIRATES FA CUP

28 November 2020

The Bantams exited the Emirates FA Cup at the second-round stage, losing 2-1 to Oldham Athletic.

Two long-range strikes either side of the half-time break were enough to see Oldham Athletic progress through to the third round at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

City began the affair the stringer side, and were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute - when Ian Lawlor rushed into Clayton Donaldson, bringing the striker down.

Donaldson stepped up from 12 yards and chipped it straight down the middle - with the Latics stopper diving the wrong way.

Oldham hit back in the 18th minute through a 25-yard strike from Conor McAleny.

The former Fleetwood Town man picked up the ball on the left-hand side of the pitch and drilled an unstoppable effort into the top corner - beyond the reach of Richard O’Donnell.

The Latics almost added a second in the 22nd minute through McAleny. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson flicked the ball forward to the Everton academy product, but his effort flashed just wide of Richard O’Donnell’s goal.

Oldham had a clear-cut opportunity to take the lead after Dylan Fage whipped in a low ball across the face of the goal to Brice Ntambwe, who put it over from two yards out.

The Latics piled more pressure onto the Bantams backline in the 34th minute. McAleny almost had his second of the afternoon after he forced a smart save from the City goalkeeper, before hitting the crossbar just moments later.

The pressure from the visitors continued as City’s defence got undone again. Ben Garrity created an opening for himself just inside the box, but he put the effort just wide of the post.

Harry Kewell’s side began the second period strongly took the lead in the 47th minute.

Danny Rowe picked up the ball from outside of the penalty area and let fly into the top corner from 30 yards out, with another sublime effort.

Stuart McCall’s side came close in the 63rd minute as Connor Wood crossed into Donaldson at the back post, but he did not manage to find the target.

Gareth Evans had a chance to level on the 77th minute after Lawlor punched Connor Wood’s cross into his path, but the City midfielder hit wide.

The Bantams could not find an equaliser in the final 10 minutes - ensuring the visitors progressed into the third round.
