WOMEN PICK UP DRAMATIC WIN

3 March 2020

City’s Women recorded their first league victory since the opening day of the season, triumphing 3-2 at Norton & Stockton.

A thrilling encounter saw the Bantams pegged back, having lead twice, before stealing all three points in the final minutes.

In a match originally scheduled to take place at City’s Mitton Group Stadium home, it was the visitors who took the lead at Norton’s Middlesbrough College base.

Against the wind, Ellie Prothero’s teasing free-kick from the edge of the area evaded everyone and beat the home goalkeeper at the near post, giving the Bantams a one-goal advantage heading into the break.

Following the restart, the hosts came back out on the front foot and drew level with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box.

Despite City responding well and dominating large parts of the second period, they had to wait until the 80th minute to retake the lead.

Second-half substitute and debutant Sophie Hawkins delivered a pinpoint corner which was headed home by Charlotte Stuart.

The pendulum then swung again with time running out, after Norton equalised from a disputed penalty.

Chris Hames’ side, though, had other ideas as - in the final minute of normal time - they snatched a winner.

Another Hawkins corner was this time lashed in by captain Katy Woodcock from close range to spark mass jubilation among the travelling players and staff.
