WOMEN LOSE OUT AWAY AT NEWCASTLE

29 January 2020

A depleted Bradford City Women’s side were overcome 2-0 away to Newcastle United.

With several players out injured, manager Chris Hames was only able to name one substitute as the Magpies edged his side out with a goal in each half.

The match began with both sides exchanging chances.

The hosts drew a smart stop from City goalkeeper Aimee Routledge before Beth Shepherd cleared a goal-bound attempt off the line.

The Bantams were unable to keep the home side at bay for much longer, though, as a shot rebounded off the crossbar and trickled over the line for 1-0.

The second period began where the first half had ended. A closely-fought midfield battle culminated in Newcastle adding a second, again in unorthodox circumstances.

A hopeful long ball was picked up by Routledge who stepped out of her area - with the ball still in her hands - due to a poorly-marked pitch.

The Newcastle forward grabbed the ball and quickly chipped in, with Routledge and the City defence stranded.

Despite a late fightback from the visitors who rallied to create opportunities, the were unable to breach the United defence as they fell to defeat.
