SCHOLAR MAKES NATIONAL TRIALS ALL-STAR SIDE

26 January 2020

Lewis Gardner of Bradford City Community Foundation's football scholarship programme made the all-star side of the National Football Youth League's trials, last month.

Gardner, who was one of four players from the programme attending the national trials at St. George's Park, impressed the coaches enough for a place in the team.

The league - where City defender Ben Richards-Everton began his career - saw thousands of players invited to trials before the all-star side was formed.

As a reward for his achievement, Gardner was invited for further trials within the Bantams' academy, prior to the festive break.

Academy manager Neil Matthews was impressed with the youngster and the signs he showed while training at Woodhouse Grove.

He said: "Lewis gave a good account of himself when he came in, albeit playing with a younger age group.

"We are interested in following this up and providing him an opportunity to train with the academy in the New Year.

"We have players going out on loan and this will provide more opportunities for current under-17 players, as well as the new under-16 players we are signing as scholars, for next season."

Cameron West-Samuel, Curtis Broadfield and goalkeeper Kyle Welsh from the programme also appeared at St. George's Park for the trials. The latter will find out next month whether or not he was successful.
