WOMEN BATTLE TO BARNSLEY DRAW

22 December 2020

Bradford City Women battled back to earn a point against Barnsley - with a 1-1 draw at the Barnsley FC Academy.

Player-coach Charlotte Stuart’s second half penalty saw the spoils shared in South Yorkshire, as Chris Hames’ side came from behind to earn a point for the third time this season.

It was the home side, with more match sharpness, who started the quicker - dominating possession and exploiting space down the flanks.

Despite this, the City goalkeeper was only called upon once to make a fairly routine save in the first half, as she tipped a free-kick over the bar.

The opening period proved a scrappy affair, as City’s well-marshalled defence kept the Tykes at bay.

After the break, the Bantams came out looking the stronger of the two sides, creating a number of half-chances which were squandered.

Hames looked to turn the game further in his side’s favour by bringing on Sophie Hawkins and Amy Beck for the booked Harriet Jakeman and Monika Stube - after an hour.

City failed however to clear their lines shortly after, and provided Csomor with an easy tap-in at the far post to give the Reds the lead after 66 minutes.

The visitors refused to let their heads drop though, and continued to press, forcing Barnsley into conceding a number of fouls.

It was one of these which gave City a way back into the game. As Sophie Hawkins broke through, she was brought down from behind in the home penalty area, and Stuart coolly converted from the spot.

This galvanised the home side, who took back control of the game in the closing stages. They had appeals for penalties of their own waved away over the final 10 minutes, but the Bantams stood firm to take a point.

CITY: Richards: Thomas, Shepherd, Woodcock (c), Norde (Roberts 87'), Jakeman (Beck 59’), Lambert, Stube (Hawkins 59’), Gill, Prothero, Stuart. Subs (not used): Douglas, Sales.
