TREVOR CHERRY: 1948-2020

29 April 2020

Bradford City is mourning the loss of former player and manager Trevor Cherry, who has passed away at the age of 72.

A former England international, Cherry spent five years in total at City, first joining in a player-manager role for £10,000 from Leeds United back in 1982, and making 102 appearances in claret and amber.

The defender finished his professional playing career at Valley Parade, securing the Division Three title in his final outing with a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in May 1985.

Cherry then turned his attention to permanent management, taking charge of the Bantams for a further two years - on a full-time basis - until 1987.

He also made 27 appearances for England, between 1976 and 1980.

Cherry is fondly remembered for his leadership during the summer of 1985, after the Valley Parade Fire Disaster. He spent much of his time attending funerals of the 56 victims and visiting injured supporters in hospital.

Following his retirement from football, he ran respective promotions, hospitality and waste-paper companies and a five-a-side football centre.

Cherry visited City on several occasions and was a special guest in the Legends Suite and at various events.

The thoughts of all at club are with Trevor’s wife Sue, sons Darren and Ian, daughter Danielle, his five grandchildren, friends and loved ones at this devastating time. May he rest in peace.
