WOMEN SUFFER HEAVY DEFEAT

9 September 2019

Bradford City Women suffered a 5-0 defeat at home to Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley on Sunday.

After a closely-contested opening period, the Tykes dominated the second half, netting four times to record the victory.

With the influential Chelsea Sanford watching on - after suffering a head injury in Wednesday evening’s abandoned fixture against Leeds United - City did well to soak up early pressure.

On 16 minutes, left-back Amelia Hunt was on hand to heroically clear an effort off the line after the Bantams goalkeeper was beaten.

However, it was the visitors who eventually opened the scoring on the half-hour mark.

After finding its way through a crowded penalty area, the ball fell to a Barnsley forward at the far post who fired into the net.

Steve Winterburn’s side provided more of an attacking threat after the interval, following the introduction of Jenny Clark and top goalscorer Falone Sumaili.

However, Barnsley doubled their advantage shortly after, with the hosts unable to clear another corner which was turned home.

In a physical battle, the away side went into overdrive and added another three goals - the final coming in stoppage time - to complete a comprehensive win.

The Bantams will look to return to winning ways when hosting Liverpool Feds on Sunday September 29 (2.00pm).
