CITY HELD TO SCUNTHORPE DRAW

28 September 2019

A brave performance from hosts Scunthorpe United saw the Bantams held to a 1-1 draw at the Sands Venue Stadium.

Gary Bowyer's men again battled back from a losing position but, despite piling pressure on their hosts late on, were unable to take all three points.

City went close to opening the scoring 11 minutes in, through skipper James Vaughan.

After Kelvin Mellor’s long throw-in was helped on by Paudie O’Connor, the ball dropped for Vaughan who’s volley rattled the post, with the goalkeeper beaten.

From the resulting counter, however, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock.

After Jamie Ward’s strike hit the arm of Kelvin Mellor inside the area, the Scunthorpe debutant stepped up and converted from the spot.

Six minutes later, the Iron were reduced to 10 men after former Bantam Matty Lund’s late lunge on Matt Palmer.

City were presented with a golden opportunity to equalise in the final minute of the half, though Connor Wood’s pinpoint cross was headed wide by Clayton Donaldson.

After surviving a scare early in the second half, through another Ward chance, the Bantams drew level on 56 minutes.

Harry Pritchard hooked a ball into the area and Paudie O’Connor was on hand to head in - via a deflection - for his third goal of the season.

City pushed hard for an equaliser, late on, having a Clayton Donaldson header cleared off the line in the final 10 minutes.

But the hosts held on to ensure the Bantams travelled back home with a point.
