YOUNG BANTAMS RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

15 October 2019

City’s under-18s side returned to winning ways in the EFL Youth Alliance North East division with a 3-1 win at Mansfield Town.

A dominant second half saw Mark Trueman’s men put an end to their hosts’ five-match winning streak.

Mansfield went close to taking the lead inside the opening 20 minutes through Jamie Chisholm and Ethan Hill, though were kept at bay by City’s 14-year-old debutant goalkeeper Darryl Ombang.

Despite being put under early pressure, Trueman’s side drew first blood - just after the half-hour mark - through Charlie Wood.

First-year scholar Cole Roberts slid the ball across the box before a mix-up in the home defence presented Wood with the opportunity to give the Bantams the lead.

Having scored first, the Bantams’ lead did not last long as they conceded a penalty - one minute later.

Stags attacker Shamar Lawson stepped up and converted from the spot to level matters.

City re-took the lead immediately after the restart through Connor Morris.

A calculated pass from Wood sent Morris clear and the forward smashed the ball past Maison Campbell in the Mansfield goal, 49 minutes in.

The away side upped the intensity further after going 2-1 up and - after going close through both Roberts and Wood - made it three courtesy of Dan Francis.

A hooked ball in from skipper Hayden Smethurst was met at the far post by Francis who scrambled in to give City breathing space - just before the hour mark.

Mansfield did create a few chances towards the end, but the young Bantams held on to secure all three points.
