BOWYER: 'PORT VALE DEFEAT TOUGH TO TAKE'

22 October 2019

Gary Bowyer was adamant his Bantams deserved to take more from a 2-1 defeat at home to Port Vale.

City’s three-match unbeaten run came to a halt against the Valiants after Will Atkinson netted a 93rd-minute winner.

Bowyer says the result will prove hard to take, given his side’s dominance in the second half.

He said: "It was a very tough defeat to take, if I am going to be honest.

"In the second half, it was all us, and I could not fault the lads for their effort.

"Our supporters recognised that, thankfully, and the players were deservedly applauded off the field.

"You saw the reaction from the lads, after the break. We responded fantastically and were, ultimately, undone at the death.

"The least we deserved was a point. I am still wondering how we have not won the game."

On a frustrating evening for the Bantams, Bowyer put defeat down to his side’s below-par first-half showing.

He believes his side missed valuable chances throughout and will look to bounce back in Saturday’s trip to Macclesfield.

"We did not begin the first half as we have been doing but we managed to get in at half-time, level,” the City chief added.

"I felt we were off the pace, in the first half, and the lads felt they were off it, too.

"We missed a lot of chances, with Hope Akpan and Zeli Ismail forcing great saves from the goalkeeper.

"Remi Oteh and Ben Richards-Everton should have scored and, even when Port Vale go 2-1 up, Paudie O’Connor - our emergency centre forward - should score, as well.

"The two goals we conceded were poor goals, from our point of view. We have to stop giving these soft goals away.

"We must dust ourselves down, take this defeat, give credit to Port Vale and get ready to go again, on Saturday."
