BANTAMS TO SUPPORT 'HELL OAR HIGH WATER'

16 November 2019

City are proud to be supporting two Bradfordians' involvement in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, next month.

On December 12, Chris and James of team 'Hell Oar High Water' (HOHW) will row over 3,000 miles - unsupported - from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean.

The pair will compete to raise money for three charities: Centrepoint Bradford, the Bradford Hospitals' Charity and Ben.

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is often regarded as the world's toughest rowing race with more people having travelled to space in history the rowed the Atlantic Ocean.

Chris and James will each burn over 10,000 calories per day - while only taking in 6,000 - and will lose 20 per-cent of their body weight before crossing the finish line.

On taking up the challenge, the men said: "We are not ex or serving military members, athletes or adventurers and we did not even have any rowing or ocean experience until a long time after we had signed up.

"Yet, we believe anyone can achieve the unthinkable and make a difference, regardless of their background or perceived ability.

"We hope to demonstrate this through our row while raising money and exposure for our chosen charities.

"It is a well-used phrase in this competition that 'getting to the start line is the hardest part' and we can vouch for this, 100 per-cent.

"This row has been our main focus for years and it has impacted every part of our lives.

"We first started talking about taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge over four years ago. It was an idea which snowballed and was one we just could not shake.

"The opportunity to challenge ourselves and show that anything is possible played a huge part in our decision to finally sign up to the challenge.

"However difficult it has been, so far, what we have learnt, on the way, has been invaluable and the satisfaction of our achievements has already outweighed any stumbling blocks.

"We cannot wait to get to the start line in La Gomera and see what challenges the Atlantic bring."
