BANTAMS TAKE POINT FROM GOALLESS DRAW AS ‘THE 56’ ARE REMEMBERED

4 May 2019

City drew the curtain on their season with a 0-0 draw at home to Wimbledon as players, staff and supporters came together to pay their respects and tributes to the 56 fans who lost their lives in the Valley Parade Fire Disaster almost 34 years ago.

On a day where - for the Bantams - the result of the match would inevitably be eclipsed by the memorial to the tragedy of 1985, there was time before the match for all affiliates of the club to reflect on the fateful events which unfolded that day.

The first period was an even affair in which Gary Bowyer's side started the brighter, with their visitors growing into the match as the half wore on.

It was the Bantams who created the best openings, as Kelvin Mellor’s curling strike from distance was tipped over and Eoin Doyle had an effort at the near post go narrowly wide.

The second period followed a similar pattern to the first, with clear-cut opportunities for both sides proving few and far between.

Sean Scannell sent a fizzing drive just wide of the post from range a minute prior to a heartfelt applause for the 56 who died at Valley Parade in the fire.

The visitors could have snatched the points with 25 minutes to play after a frantic goalmouth scramble led to them having two shots cleared off the line - one from Anthony O’Connor and the other well stopped by Ben Wilson.

But goalless it remained as the London club ensured their League One survival, with a point combined with other results going in their favour enough to keep them safe in the third tier for another campaign.
