AKPAN HONOURED TO CAPTAIN CITY

11 March 2019

Hope Akpan has spoken of his pride after captaining the Bantams to victory on Saturday afternoon.

The 27-year-old, who played under City manager Gary Bowyer at Blackburn, was named skipper prior to kick-off.

And the Bantams went on to record an impressive 3-1 win on home soil, moving them to within four points of safety.

Akpan said: “We certainly deserved the win. We had a lot to deal with during the first half, from Peterborough, as we were getting used to the shape.

“But we weathered the storm well and took our chances brilliantly in the second half.

“We certainly got the balance right. Our shape worked well and we had men up front, making us a threat going forward.

“The lads sat behind the strikers threatened Peterborough a great deal and we played some good football, which the supporters enjoyed.

“On a personal note, it was a great honour to be named captain. My message to the players was to really go for it and fight right through to the end, which we did.

“We stuck together and, if we can continue in a similar vein, we can pull away from the position we are in.”

City welcome high-flying Luton Town to the Northern Commercials Stadium tomorrow evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Hatters are seven points clear at the Sky Bet League One summit, though have drawn two of their last three games.

“There is much more to come from us and we will not stop fighting to stay in this division,” added Akpan.

“The supporters were hugely welcoming towards the gaffer and they are fantastic to play in front of.

“Gary said he wouldn’t have come here if he didn’t think we could stay up and the fans gave us a huge lift before kick-off.

“If we give the supporters what they want they will back us. They got right behind us and we are going to need that and more in the last 10 games, so it is onwards and upwards from here.”
