BOWYER EXCITED AHEAD OF PRE-SEASON START

24 June 2019

Gary Bowyer is anticipating an intense training camp as he prepares for his first pre-season as City manager.

The Bantams will commence training this morning and Bowyer believes a strong pre-season will set the precedent for a positive 2019/20 campaign.

The City boss said: “This year’s pre-season will be a very tough one for the players, for sure.

“There has already been a lot of planning, and a lot of preparation has gone into it. We have a fantastic selection of games which all present different challenges.

“We need to get the players in the correct physical condition to cope with different situations in those matches - and deal with the demands of next season. We will make sure we do that.

“I think the main thing, next season, is the fact we must be competitive. We need to be consistent and patient over the course of nine months.

“More than anything, we have to be ready to combat what this league offers. A lot of work is going in to make sure we are.”

The former Blackpool boss - who achieved promotion to Sky Bet League One with the Tangerines in 2017 – has also stressed the importance of recruitment during the off-season.

Bowyer has, so far, been active in the transfer market - with eight additions already this summer - and has outlined the different qualities potential targets must carry.

He added: “First and foremost, the squad next season has to be competitive.

“Our players must be able to run around and compete, because we are entering a very competitive league.

“It is essential to bring the right type of players in. Physicality in this league is important.

“I feel we have addressed this scenario well, particularly in defence with the size we have brought in.

“We are looking to add to that with some pace and power further up the pitch. There are some players who can excite and go past people, like Zeli Ismail.

“Players like Zeli certainly add quality in that department, and we are looking to bring more players like him in.”
