BIG MATCH PREVIEW: CITY v NEWPORT

6 December 2019

The Bantams return to action at the Utilita Energy Stadium tomorrow, hosting Newport County (3.00pm).

Gary Bowyer's men look to return to winning ways, after a 1-1 draw at Macclesfield Town, last weekend.

The visiting Exiles currently sit 11th in Sky Bet League Two, having reached the play-offs, last season.

We have compiled a Big Match Preview full of in-depth pre-match analysis - ahead of the encounter.

TEAM NEWS

City: Gary Bowyer could again have more midfielders to choose from, for the visit of Newport.

Callum Cooke and Matty Plamer could again be in contention for minutes, while Shay McCartan could also make his return from injury.

But they will have to wrestle starting berths off Jake Reeves and Chris Taylor, who both impressed in last week's draw at Macclesfield Town.

Newport: Newport boss Michael Flynn is hit with injury troubles ahead of his side's trip to West Yorkshire.

The former City midfielder will be without the services of Corey Whitely who was withdrawn from Tuesday's Leasing.com Trophy victory over Brighton and Hove Albion Under-21s with injury.

Micky Demetriou could be pushing for minutes, though, after Flynn admitted he was nearing his return.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

Gary Bowyer: "We cannot afford to just turn up and expect to get a result - against Newport - like with any team in this division.

They have a lot of experienced players and we are well-aware of the challenge we will be faced with.

Michael Flynn: "It is going to be a really nice occasion, for myself. I am very fond of Bradford, the club means a lot to me.

"They are going to be challenging for promotion, definitely. They may have had a couple of bad weeks but they will be there or thereabouts - come the end of April."

LAST TIME OUT

Tomorrow's affair represents the first time the two sides have met since Newport County's reformation, in 1989.

The Bantams' last meeting with the Exiles came towards the end of the 1984/85 promoton-winning campaign, on April 16th 1985.

Trevor Cherry's City recorded a 1-0 victory in South Wales.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Anthony Backhouse has been in charge of 15 matches this season, issuing 49 yellow cards and two reds.
