Top scorer Jordy Hiwula swooped to net City's all-important match-winner and book the Bantams' place in Checkatrade Trophy quarter-finals following a hard-fought victory at Cheltenham Town.

Hiwula grabbed his ninth goal of the season midway through the second period when he pounced to fire home from close range after Hanson had headed on from wide free-kick into the box from Tony McMahon.

On a difficult playing surface, City had to dig in at times to secure their passage into the last eight but there was no doubting the attitude and professionalism of Stuart McCall's men after a battling performance.

In an even opening period, City's best opportunity of the first half came six minutes before the break when Daniel Devine was denied by Cheltenham 'keeper Calum Kitscha after the shot-stopper had initially repelled an effort from Mark Marshall.

Less than sixty seconds later, Rouven Sattelmaier was called into action when he pushed around the post from an effort by James Barthram from the edge of the box.

Skipper Romain Vincelot was replaced by Josh Cullen at the break in a pre-planned move.

As the action got back underway, Cheltenham were the side who started the second period strongly, with Billy Waters forcing Sattelmaier into a smart save and then Danny Wright curling narrowly wide shortly afterwards.

It was City who took the lead, however, just under twenty minutes after the restart from Hiwula.

From a McMahon free-kick into the box, Hanson headed down into the mix. Rory McArdle, who partnered Matthew Kilgallon in defence on the night, tried to latch onto the ball but Hiwula behind him was in the right position to slot home from close range.

Billy Clarke made a welcome return from injury a few minutes later, replacing the impressive Marshall.

Cheltenham came close to levelling things up fourteen minutes from the end but Waters hit the bar with a rising drive from just inside the box.

Devine had a chance to make the game safe eight minutes from the end after being teed up by Clarke but his shot from inside the box was blocked by Dan O'Shaughnessy.

The Robins tried to force a way back into the game thereafter but City used all of their experience and know-how to see out the tie and book their trip to Oxford United in the quarter-finals next week.

76min: Cheltenham hit the bar through Waters! A probing run Emmanuel Onariase causes some problems in the City defence as he surges forward into space towards City's penalty area. The ball eventually drops at the feet of Waters just inside the box and he proceeds to rattle the top of Sattelmaier's crossbar with a fierce rising drive.

57min: After claiming a Waters cross, Sattelmaier looks to play the ball out to McMahon but his throw hits the head of the nearby De Girolamo. Luckily for City though, Sattelmaier is able to gather up the loose ball as it bounces across his box.
56min: De Girolamo moves towards the edge of City's penalty area before firing in a low drive that curls away from Sattelmaier's goal.
55min: Timothee Dieng fires a low drive from just inside the box narrowly wide of Kitscha's near post.

47min: Cheltenham have the ball in the net through De Girolamo but the goal is ruled out for a foul. Following Waters' low centre into the middle, an almighty scramble ensues. Wright sees an effort blocked from close range before the linesman's flag is raised to signal an infringement ahead of De Girolamo firing in.
HT SUB - The Bantams bring on Josh Cullen for Vincelot at half time. McMahon takes over the captain's armband following Vincelot's departure.

37min: Stephen Darby's cross from the left is glanced wide of the target via the header of Hanson with Vincelot lurking behind looking to perhaps pounce himself.
30min: Marshall bursts past Cranston on City's right wing before whipping a cross into the box. The delivery is an inviting one but neither Hanson nor Jordy Hiwula in the middle can quite capitalise as Cheltenham clear their lines.
30min: Pell fires wide of Sattelmaier's near post with an effort from a free-kick roughly twenty yards out.
28min: Marshall crosses over from the right but Romain Vincelot's downward header lacks the power and accuracy to trouble Kitscha, who gathers with relative ease.
25min: Marshall goes for goal direct from a free-kick roughly twenty-five yards out but his effort hits into the wall.

5min: Mark Marshall fires for goal from outside the box but Calum Kitscha gets his body behind the low curling effort to cling onto the shot.
1min: Billy Waters' cross eventually drops into the path of Jack Barthram over by the far side of the penalty area. Barthram shoots for goal first time but the looping effort on the half volley sails over.
0min: Cheltenham kick off the tie.
