In a powerful opening to the contest from Stuart McCall's men, City deservedly took charge of the match thanks to a double strike from Charlie Wyke within the first sixteen minutes.

Wyke fired City into the lead in the tenth minute when his bobbling strike from just inside the box squirmed through the grasp of Bolton shot-stopper Ben Alnwick and into the net.

With the Northern Commercials Stadium bouncing at this stage, Wyke increased the Bantams' lead six minutes later when he tapped home from close range after Nicky Law had lobbed the ball over the advancing Alnwick.

Bolton, managed by former boss Phil Parkinson on his first return to Valley Parade, created a couple of chances later in the half via Gary Madine but City were full value for their lead at the interval.

The Bantams still looked in control of the contest as the second half got underway but a slightly fortunate goal from David Wheater got the visitors back into the game just past the hour mark.

Bolton managed to keep the ball alive from substitute James Henry free-kick into the box and Wheater was able to find the net with a mishit shot that spun over the line via the inside of the post.

Marshall hit the support post behind Alnwick's goal with a fierce strike from outside the box minutes later, but Bolton crawled their way back level fifteen minutes from time through Madine.

The striker was on hand to header home from close range after being found in space in the middle from Henry's inviting cross.

City responded after the blow of being pegged back, taking the game to Bolton once again in the closing stages.

City sub Timothee Dieng hit the post with a strike from distance, while Wyke, looking for his hat-trick, fired over with a shot on the turn deep inside the box with only three minutes of normal time remaining.

84min: Bolton keep the ball alive from a Morais free-kick from deep into the box. The ball eventually drops at the feet of Solomon-Otabor but the sub's deflected low drive is easily held by Doyle.

82min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Jordy Hiwula for Marshall.

78min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Alex Gilliead for Law.

78min: Dieng hits the post! The Frenchman drives for goal from outside the box and the fierce drive rattles against Alnwick's near post.

72min: McMahon's ball over the top has Marshall in with a run at goal but the attacker stumbles over the bar as a recovering Wheater approaches him and Alnwick is able to gather up.

71min: McMahon moves forward deep into Bolton territory but his eventual effort for goal from outside the box curls harmlessly wide of Alnwick's goal.

68min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Timothee Dieng for Clarke.

67min: Marshall turns away from Wheater before firing in a fierce left footed strike that rattles against the support post behind Alnwick's goal.

65min: YELLOW CARD - Cullen is booked for foul on Morais just inside Bolton's half of the pitch.

61min: Clarke's forward pass picks out Cullen's run into the box but the midfielder's strike goes over the bar.

58min: Madine plays a one-two with Vela but his shot for goal from inside the box while under pressure from McArdle goes over.

57min: Law's cross into the box is contested by both Wyke and Alnwick, with the Bolton shot-stopper eventually gathering up the ball on the bounce at third attempt.

33min: Billy Clarke's teasing corner delivery towards the far post has to be pushed behind by Alnwick with Nathaniel Knight-Percival lurking behind looking for the close range header.

29min: Filipe Morais puts a testing ball into City's area but Madine heads over on the stretch by the far post.

26min: Le Fondre squares the ball across the box to Gary Madine, the powerful striker's shot for goal is parried by Doyle and McMahon is on hand to clear up on the rebound.

19min: Le Fondre latches onto a ball forward and shoots for goal from just inside the box, his effort deflects off Rory McArdle and Doyle has to play save and tip the effort around the post.

10min: The ball is played into the path of Adam Le Fondre inside the area but the striker's low strike for goal from a tight angle is comfortably held by Doyle.

8min: Vincelot's hooked clearance falls into the path of Dean Moxey just outside the box but the left wing back's strike for goal bounces wide of Colin Doyle's far post.

7min: Romain Vincelot tries to play Charlie Wyke in with a run at goal but Bolton shot-stopper Ben Alnwick comes out to the edge of his box to kick away.
