It tells you everything you need to know about the current mindset at Bradford City that while reflecting on a six-game unbeaten start to the season that has the club occupying second spot in Sky Bet League One, there is still an acceptance of room for improvement.
The Bantams have collected 12 points from the 18 on offer, but that tally could have been even healthier had dominance in certain fixtures delivered greater reward.
Ensuring that pressure turns into points is the challenge facing Stuart McCall and his troops, with club captain Stephen Darby having seen enough so far to suggest that considered game management will be rewarded at both ends of the field.
He told the Official Bradford City App: “The main thing is that you do create chances, and we have dominated games. At the weekend against Millwall, especially in the second half, we showed a different side to us where if we are under a little bit of pressure, we are strong and resilient as a team and we can see that pressure out. But we have been dominating games, we have been creating chances, so it’s important that we keep doing that.”
With a 3-1 victory over Coventry City the only fixture the Bantams have won by more than the odd goal, attention towards the end of the summer transfer window was fixed on bolstering the attacking ranks with proven performers – with loan agreements put in place for Marc McNulty and Haris Vuckic very much ticking that box.
Darby added on the new arrivals: “You only have to look at the two lads that came in on deadline day, they have got bags of ability and I’m sure that once they start training and playing games with the lads, they will build an understanding and hit the ground running. You only have to look at what they have done in their career so far to see the ability and quality that they both bring to the side.
“Experience is massive and those two lads have played in the league and know what it’s about. They have played for good clubs and I’m sure that both of them are really hungry and eager to succeed. There is no better place to be than Bradford City for that – the fans turn out in their numbers week in, week out, home and away, and it’s a club that is very ambitious and looking to improve.”
McNulty and Vuckic have also added further depth to a squad already well stocked in every department, with City having coped admirably with early injuries to put themselves in a position which can be strengthened as the walking wounded return and McCall finds himself blessed with even greater options.
“We haven’t had the full squad fit so far this season,” said Darby.
“We have got a really strong squad and we have got a lot of lads to come back from injury as well. Once they are back, there will be a really good competition for places. But it’s got to be healthy competition and we’ve all got to be pulling in the right direction and wanting the same thing – the best for Bradford City, which is what everyone here wants. We all want to succeed and the competition will be there and we’ll all be pushing for the right thing.”
