Checkatrade Trophy Northern Group C - Match 2
Tuesday 4 October 2016

Attendance: 1,865 (172 visitors)

First half goals from Haris Vuckic and Jordy Hiwula helped to secure victory over Bury and make it two wins out of two for the Bantams in this season's Checkatrade Trophy.

Hiwula was on hand to set up Vuckic for City's opener just past the half hour mark, the Slovenian confidently firing past former Bantams 'keeper Ben Williams into the far bottom corner.

Vuckic then turned provider just four minutes later, returning the favour to tee up Hiwula to slot past Williams from deep inside the box.

Bury pulled a goal back after the restart through loanee winger Tom Walker midway through the half but City saw out the remainder of the contest to move themselves three points clear at the top of Northern Group C.

Defenders Nathan Clarke and Rory McArdle were paired together at centre half for the duo's first action with the senior squad this season following a campaign disrupted by injury in the early stages.

Along with Vuckic, Filipe Morais, Daniel Devine, Matthew Kilgallon and Vincent Rabiega were also brought into the side from the eleven that began Saturday's league win at Chesterfield.

Hiwula, who saw a fairly strong penalty appeal turned down when he appeared to be felled in the box via a challenge from Bury defender Niall Maher, was on hand later in the first period to help City open the scoring.

It was the striker's pass that played Vuckic into space just inside the area and the Newcastle United loanee found the far bottom corner with a low left-footed angle drive.

Hiwula got on the scoresheet himself shortly afterwards, Vuckic this time with the telling pass to allow the striker to fire low past Williams and double City's lead.

With an hour gone, City, who were led by assistant Kenny Black for the evening, introduced apprentice duo Tom Windle and Kwame Boateng for Stephen Darby and Timothee Dieng.

The substitutions completed the Bantams' set for the evening after Rouven Sattelmaier had been brought on for fellow shot-stopper Colin Doyle towards the start of the match.

Within eight minutes of City's second half alterations, Bury had a goal back through Walker.

Walker, who is on loan from fellow Sky Bet League One side Bolton Wanderers, got the better of Windle over by the right-hand side of City's penalty box before driving for goal and firing past Sattelmaier.

Hallam Hope, Walker and substitute Scott Burgess had opportunities to try and test Sattelmaier in the game's latter stages but Bury were unable to muster another goal to secure a draw and take the match to penalties.

74min: SUB - Bury bring on Scott Burgess for Tutte.
74min: YELLOW CARD - Morais is booked for complaining after it appeared Tutte may have handled the ball in the build up to Hope's earlier chance.
74min: After winning possession of the ball just inside City's half of the pitch, Bury spring forward on the attack. The attack ends with Hope firing not too far wide of Sattelmaier's near post with a swerving shot from just inside the box.
72min: Leigh's driven cross into the six yard box narrowly misses the lurking Soares in the middle before going out for a throw-in over by the far side.
70min: Morais drives in-field from a wide right position before firing in a strike from just outside the box that deflects of Kelvin Etuhu and past Williams' near post.

47min: After passing wide to Morais just inside the area, Hiwula receives the ball back to him via the Portuguese winger's low centre across the six yard box. Hiwula tries to convert from close range but he can't quite get a clean connection and the ball is bundled behind by Williams' near post for a goal-kick.
46min: The Bantams restart the match.
HT: Bradford City 2 Bury 0
45min: There will be two minutes of time added on at the end of the first half.

35min: GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Bradford City 2 Bury 0 - Hiwula doubles City's lead! After being set up by Hiwula for City's opening goal, Vuckic returns the favour this time around, playing team-mate into space inside the box and the striker finishes low under Williams.

31min: GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bradford City 1 Bury 0 - Vuckic has City in the lead! Hiwula plays the attacker into space behind Bury's defensive line and he finishes neatly from inside the box with a low angled drive into the far bottom corner.
30min: Daniel Devine takes aim from outside the area but his low drive goes wide of Williams' near post.
27min: Sattelmaier has to sprint from his goal and punch clear to narrowly beat Hallam Hope to a forward pass inside City's penalty area.
26min: Walker's shot from just outside the area deflects wide of Sattelmaier's near post via a City defender for a Bury corner. The resulting Jacob Mellis' corner delivery is over-hit, however, and City can watch the ball out for a goal-kick.
26min: Maher is now back on the pitch as play continues.
24min: City's strong penalty appeals are turned down after Jordy Hiwula is brought down in the box following Niall Maher's challenge. Maher tries to intercept a Vuckic pass but the ball still finds Hiwula in a decent position inside the box. Hiwula looks to get the ball out of his feet and get his shot away but the striker is felled by the recovering Maher's tackle. The home fans shout loudly for a spot-kick but referee Ben Toner is unmoved. Maher appears to have injured himself making that tackle on Hiwula, leading to a break in play.
22min: Morais aims for the far top corner with a curling effort from roughly twenty yards out but Williams is able to watch the shot sail over his bar with room to spare.
17min: Andrew Tutte's brilliant cross-field plays Soares into plenty of space down Bury's right flank. Soares pulls the ball back from inside the box to the unmarked Tom Walker but the attacker prods comfortably wide from a decent position inside the area.
