McMahon swooped to connect with James Meredith's cross early into the second period and drop a looping header over the head of Oldham 'keeper Joel Coleman and into the opposite corner of his goal.

McMahon's match-winning effort came after Oldham substitute defender Connor Brown was given a straight red card for a lunge on Kyel Reid shortly before the break.

James Hanson and City sub Josh Morris had chances to increase the Bantams' lead following McMahon's opener while Christopher Routis, playing in central midfield, went close to scoring from distance after Coleman had left his area.

In the end though, a fine reaction save from Ben Williams, who had already produced a smart stop to deny Jake Cassidy in the first half, was required to secure victory as the City shot-stopper blocked a close range Liam Kelly header from a late Oldham corner.

82min: Marshall's hanging cross from the right is met by the head of a stretching Hanson, who is able to knock the ball down into the mix. Cole is quickly onto the loose ball to beat Coleman but his flick for goal from close range goes into the side-netting.

81min: With Oldham on the attack, Brian Wilson fires the ball across the six yard box with a cushioned half-volley but Nathan Clarke is in the right position to make the important clearance.

80min: SUB - The Bantams bring on Mark Marshall for Routis.

79min: YELLOW CARD - Meredith is booked for taking too long over a City throw, something with also results in the throw-in going to Oldham instead.

75min: Evans' ball from deep has Hanson in behind Oldham's defence but Coleman is out quickly to smother and the ball eventually hits off the City striker before rolling out for a goal-kick.

73min: Morris ends the better of James Wilson to latch onto Cole's forward pass into the box. Morris takes his aim before firing in a rising drive from an angle that narrowly goes over by Coleman's near post.

70min: Hanson is picked out inside the box following a quick City free-kick from wide but the striker's looping header goes narrowly over.

66min: The ball bounces into the path of McMahon a few yards outside the box and his looping half-volley drops not too far wide of Coleman's goal.

From Oldham's next attack, Cassidy is played into space in a wide position inside the area but his centre flashes across City's penalty box.

58min: YELLOW CARD - Carl Winchester is booked for grabbing hold of the ball as he slipped over while in possession.

57min: As City counter an Oldham attack, Evans tries to play Reid into space in behind Oldham's defence. Coleman is quickly out of his box to beat Reid to the ball but his clearance lands at the feet of Routis. The Frenchman goes for goal from all of 45 yards out but his effort drops just over the bar.

57min: Laffetrty's dangerous centre across the six yard box is vitaly cleared by a well-positioned Rory McArdle.

56min: Jones' free-kick from just outside the box is blocked by the City wall. As the Bantams try to clear their lines, the ball eventually falls into the path of Jones again and his strike from outside the area takes a slight deflection on its way behind for an Oldham corner.

47min: Kelly tries his luck from some distance out but his low effort bounces comfortably wide of Williams' far post.

46min: Oldham restart the match.

45+1min: James Meredith's low ball into the box finds Hanson but the striker's goal-bound strike from only yards out is crucially blocked by a diving tackle from Dieng.

40min: RED CARD - Oldham are down to ten men after substitute Brown is given a straight red for a fierce challenge on Reid just inside the visitors' half of the pitch.

40min: Oldham go close after the ball drops into the path of Jake Cassidy inside the area following build up play from Mike Jones and then Daniel Lafferty. Cassidy flicks the bouncing ball goalwards with the outside of his boot but Ben Williams produces a smart save on the stretch to push the effort away.

39min: Billy Clarke finds himself in shooting space inside the box but his eventual effort on goal is blocked. The ball drops out to Reid outside the area but he slips as he makes contact, sending his strike sailing high and wide into the Oldham fans behind the goal. 

28min: McMahon fizzes over a wide free-kick delivery towards the far post but the ball is just out of the reach of the stretching Nathan Clarke by the byline and it goes out for a goal-kick.

26min: The Bantams bench appeal for a penalty as Hanson appears to get nudged over in the box as he tries to get his head onto a McMahon cross into the box. Much to the annoyance of Phil Parkinson and his staff, however, nothing is given.

25min: SUB - Oldham bring on Connor Brown for Cameron Dummigan.

21min: Routis is picked out by a cross-field pass from Lee Evans but the ball seems to bobble up at him as he tries to control it. As a result, the Frenchman can only send a looping half-volley from outside the box comfortably over the bar as he is closed down by Liam Kelly.

19min: Reid runs at Timothee Dieng over on City's left flank before checking back onto his right foot and firing in a low ball that only nestles harmlessly into the side-netting by Coleman's near post.

17min: YELLOW CARD - McMahon is booked for a late challenge on James Wilson just inside Oldham's half of the pitch.

14min: Christopher Routis picks out Reid in space inside Oldham half of the pitch, allowing the winger the opportunity to turn and run towards the visitors' penalty area. Reid surges forward at pace before firing in a low drive from just outside the box that bobbles harmlessly wide of Coleman's goal.

11min: Lee Evans' great pass wide finds Kyel Reid in space over by the left flank but the winger's flighted centre across the six yard box sails over everyone and out for a throw-in at the other side.

1min: Nathan Clarke's long throw-in into the box bounces into the path of Tony McMahon and his left-footed effort on the spin flashes not too far over Joel Coleman's crossbar.
