FIVE-STAR CITY RECORD COMFORTABLE RESERVES WIN

23 February 2016

City's reserves recorded a comfortable victory over Port Vale in the Final Third Development League this Tuesday afternoon.

Doubles from Mark Marshall and trialist Liam Agnew, plus a first half effort from Billy Clarke, helped the Bantams on their way to a resounding 5-1 victory over the Valiants at West Riding County FA headquarters in Woodlesford, Leeds.

Along with Marshall and Clarke, a strong reserve line up for the Bantams also included Jamie Proctor, Christopher Routis, Josh Morris, Joe Cracknell and Greg Leigh.

Vale's team for the fixture contained first team squad members Sam Kelly, Adam Yates, Remie Streete, Chris Birchall, Michael Brown, JJ Hooper and one-time City trialist Achille Campion.

Playing against one of his former clubs, Marshall opened the scoring for City after only ten minutes when Clarke's cross was knocked into his path by Proctor and the winger calmly curled the ball into the far corner from roughly twelve yards out.

The Bantams doubled their advantage just four minutes later when Clarke played a one-two with Proctor before the Irishman coolly slotted past Vale 'keeper Ryan Boot from inside the box.

With the Bantams continuing their dominance in the early stages of the match, two became three shortly afterwards.

Clarke turned provider this time, with the striker's neat passing exchange with Agnew giving the trialist midfielder the time to drive a shot past Boot by his near post from close range.

Marshall was proving to be a real inconvenience to Vale's defence, constantly trying to get involved in the action, and he could have added to City's goal tally later in the half when Sam Wright played him clear.

The winger drew Boot from his area and knocked the ball around him but his low strike for goal was blocked by Vale defender Mackenzie Faulkner before it could get over the line.

Marshall threatened again towards the end of the half when he tricked his way into the box but his angled drive flew just over the bar.

After the break, Vale pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when JJ Hooper was felled just inside the box by trialist defender Sinn'Kaye Christie shortly before the hour mark.

Hooper himself took responsibility for the kick, sending Cracknell the wrong way with a powerful side-foot finish.

Proctor tried to restore City's three-goal advantage minutes later but his flick for goal was saved by Boot after Clarke's clever through-ball had put him in clear shooting space inside the Vale box.

Proctor was eventually involved in City's fourth goal of the afternoon, however, when he was released into space down City's left flank thanks to Wright's well-placed pass from deep.

The striker drove into the box before squaring for Agnew to fire past Boot from close range.

With his link-up play impressing all afternoon, it was no surprise that Proctor also played a part in City's fifth and final contribution to the scoring charts either.

Controlling substitute Dylan Mottley-Henry's cross, Proctor flicked the ball up into the path of Marshall and the winger expertly volleyed home past Boot with a fine first time left-footed strike from inside the box.
