DUO WIN MONTHLY LEAGUE 1 AWARDS

9 January 2015

The Bantams have a double reason to celebrate this Friday after City chief Phil Parkinson and defender Rory McArdle were confirmed as winners of the Sky Bet League 1 Manager of the Month and Player of the Month awards respectively for December.

Parkinson beat off competition from Scunthorpe boss Mark Robins, Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper and MK Dons' Karl Robinson for the Manager of the Month gong, while McArdle got the nod over Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Ben Garratt, Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw and Swindon forward Andy Williams for the Player of the Month award.

Parkinson earned his monthly managerial honour after leading the Bantams to three wins and one draw from their four league matches throughout December.

City's fine run of form during the month also saw Parkinson's men move into the League 1 Play-Off places.

The award for Parkinson is the second given to the City chief during his time at the Coral Windows Stadium after the Bantams boss also won the League 2 Manager of the Month for December back in 2011.

Parkinson said: "It is good for myself and Rory to get these accolades.

"We both understand, however, that we are picking up the awards on behalf of the rest of the team and the rest of the coaching staff though.

"It is nice to be recognised, and we have had a great month, but we drawn a line under it now and move on.

"We take the plaudits today as we receive these trophies but we will quickly move our focus back onto what will be a massive game for us on Saturday (vs Rochdale)."

McArdle was chosen for the player award after helping City to three clean sheets out of their four league games in December.

The Bantams, in fact, only conceded one goal throughout the entire month.

As well as helping to keep the ball out of City's own net, McArdle pitched in with a goal of his own at the opposite end of the field when he scored a brilliant strike against Scunthorpe United.

Speaking about McArdle's award, Parkinson said: “Rory has been in impressive form throughout this season and, along with the rest of our back four, has been a key component during our recent unbeaten run.

“Along with his tenacious displays at the back, Rory has also helped chip in with a goal or two at the other end this season, including his brilliant finish against Scunthorpe United during the month of December.”

McArdle himself said: "It great to receive this award and something I didn't really think I would be getting. I am over the moon with this.

"Something like this is a real privilege, especially for a defender like myself. Usually these awards go to strikers or midfielders when they are scoring goals.

"It is even rarer for a manager and a player from the same club to get these awards in the same month so all credit much go to the lads and the backroom staff we have here as well.

"It just shows how good our run is at the moment and how far we have come.

"It is nice as an individual to get these awards but you can't do it alone. You need the support and backing of your team-mates during the game and the staff as well.

"The lads in attack have been scoring the goals to keep us unbeaten and the guys at the back with me have more than played their part also in giving us this good current defensive record."
