City fan groups - Bantamstrek and the Friends of Bradford City - are set to join forces in a bid to set up a series of fundraising events over the next 18 months or so for Macmillan Cancer Support and Bradford's Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit.
The two groups are planning to organise a number of different activities over the next couple of seasons - including a sponsored 1,000 mile walk from John O'Groats to Land's End, a curry night, bag-packing sessions at local supermarkets, plus question and answer sessions with Bradford City players.
All the money raised from such events will be divided equally between Macmillian Cancer Support and PSBRU (Plastic Surgey and Burns Research Unit).
The first fundraising projects run by Bantamstrek and the Friends of Bradford City will be a sponsored canal walk on Sunday 10 August 2014 - mainly aimed at children and young families - and then a sponsored trek up Yorkshire's Three Peaks the following Sunday (17 August).
City kit man John Duckworth, who helped to create Bantamstrek, said: “I want to raise a substantial amount of money for both charities.
"This is going to be a big challenge, but I really hope people will get behind us. I chose Macmillan because everyone has been affected by cancer and they’re an organisation which is there for people all the way through their cancer journey.
"PSBRU was set up following the Bradford fire and I think they do great work. I was there on the day of the fire and it's always in my thoughts, and it's important not just to raise money this year for the 30th anniversary, but every year."
John is no stranger to fundraising for both organisations over the years either.
With his fellow Bantamstrek supporters, John raised thousands of pounds for the Burns Unit by walking from Bradford to Lincoln ahead of City's New Year's Day game at Sincil Bank back in 2011 and then trekking from Lincoln to Bradford before the club's final match of the season at home to Swindon Town in 2012.
John has also supported Macmillan in the past by setting up a sponsored coffee morning at the Coral Windows Stadium last September.
DETAILS WILL BE AVAILABLE SHORTLY ON HOW SUPPORTERS CAN TAKE PART IN THE SPONSORED CANAL WALK AND/OR YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE.
