Capital One Cup Round 2

Leeds United 1 (Smith 82)
Kick Off: 7.45pm
at the Coral Windows Stadium

Attendance: 18,750 (3,828 visitors)

A stunning late comeback from the Bantams saw Phil Parkinson's side pick up the local bragging rights over West Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United and secure a place in the Capital One Cup Third Round.

City looked to be heading out of the competition when visitors Leeds, who had been down to ten men from as early as just after the half hour mark following Luke Murphy's two first half yellow cards, shocked a bumper home support by taking the lead through Matt Smith eight minutes from the end.

Smith's header from a David Norris cross had been Leeds' only real effort on target of the whole second period up until that point as City mainly took advantage of their extra man to dominate possession after the break.

Far from go into their shells after Smith's late intervention though, City hit back in superb fashion with two goals within four minutes of going behind in a dramatic conclusion to the derby tie at the Coral Windows Stadium.

The Bantams' equaliser came less than two minutes later via a fierce drive from outside the box by Billy Knott after an Alan Sheehan corner had been cleared out into his path.

That goal sparked mast celebrations around Valley Parade but greater scenes were to follow when Parkinson's men went one better and took the lead of the tie with their very next attack.

Gary Liddle's cross into the area was headed in by the diving frame of James Hanson to complete the Bantams' comeback and give them the lead of the game with only minutes remaining.

Play was halted for over three minutes following Hanson's goal after a crowd disturbance appeared to break out over by a section of the stand holding the 3,800+ visiting Leeds supporters.

Partly due to this break in play, City had to see out nine minutes of added on time before they could secure the welcome win.

Smith and substitute Dominic Poleon threatened to muster in a barely-deserved equaliser in the depths of the extended period of over-time but City hung on to claim their first win over their near neighbours in twenty-eight years.

23min: Wootton's hanging cross into the area is met by a downward header from Smith but the effort is easy enough for Williams to gather.
20min: Wootton's angled ball into the box is headed down by Smith into the path of Sharp deep inside City's penalty area. The Leeds striker tries to turn for goal for a close range shot but Sheehan and James Meredith combine to deny him and the ball is eventually bundled behind for a goal kick.
