City kicked off the new campaign in the winning fashion with a dramatic giant-killing over League 1 Notts County to book their place in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

After the Bantams had proved more than a match for their higher-ranked hosts during a goalless ninety minutes, City's James Hanson popped up early into the first period of extra time to grab the game's eventual winner.

Hanson grabbed City's all-important goal by completing a flowing move involving Kyel Reid and substitute Nahki Wells with a superb curling effort into the top corner from around the edge of the area.

The cup upset was no more than Phil Parkinson's men deserved after a thoroughly determined and disciplined performance from his side.

Keith Curle's County had their moments at either end of both periods of normal time - in particular when Yoann Arquinn hit the crossbar from only yards out with the goal gapping after the ninety minute mark - but City's clean sheet to go with the win was reward for an overall composed defensive display.

Despite City's solid defensive set-up, Parkinson's side also had their moments in attack, with Reid in particular looking a threat during several sections of the game.

Parkinson chose to give out six competitive debuts at Meadow Lane for City season-opening tie. The trio of Stephen Darby, James Meredith and Rory McArdle joined Luke Oliver in City's defence.

Gary Jones started in midfield with Will Atkinson and was handed the captain's armband, while Garry Thompson and Alan Connell also made the starting eleven following their run-out at Bradford (Park Avenue) during the week.

Latest recruit Nathan Doyle became City's seventh debutant of the day as a late substitute.

MATCH UPDATES:
FT: Notts County 0 Bradford City 1
120min: There will be a minute of time added on at the end of extra time.
120min: Lee Hughes beats McArdle to Jeff Hughes' low near post cross but his flicked effort from around six yards out is wayward.
118min: City fail to deal with a lofted ball into their area properly but thankfully Lee Hughes doesn't punish them as he can only fire over with a shot on the turn from around ten yards out.
112min: Wells gets in behind County's back-line after out-muscling Bencherif to a long ball over the top. Wells still has to retrieve the ball from a wide position within the box, however, and his angled drive is blocked out by the chest of Bialkowski.
111min: Judge lashes a free-kick from around 25 yards out well wide of the target.
109min: Arquinn curls a fizzing strike a few inches wide of goal after a pumped County free-kick into the box had fallen into his path around the edge of the area.
106min: Arquinn fires wide of Duke's near post with a first time half-volley from an angle after finding himself in a yard or so of space around twelve yards out.
106min: County restart extra time.
HT of ET: Notts County 0 Bradford City 1
105min: There will be a minute of time added on at the end of the first period.
105min: SUB - Nathan Doyle is brought on for Reid. Atkinson will move across to the right flank to accommodate Doyle's introduction into central midfield.
100min: From a City throw-in, Wells plays an intelligent ball across the area into the path of the on-rushing Reid to set up a promising opening for the winger. Running around the ball to get it onto his favoured left foot, however, Reid can only stab over the bar from around the penalty spot.
97min: A cute back-heel from Lee Hughes plays Judge into space at an angle within City's penalty area but his dragged cross-come-shot bobbles across the six yard box and eventually out for a goal-kick.
95min: GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Notts County 0 Bradford City 1 - Hanson fires City into the lead with a delightful curling effort into the top corner from just inside the area. The goal caps off a flowing and swift City attack which started with Reid before Wells got involved to tee up Hanson.
92min: YELLOW CARD - Wells is the seventh player booked now, this time for kicking the ball into the stands after the whistle had gone following the award of a County free-kick further up the pitch.
91min: The Bantams get the first period of extra time under way.
NOTTS COUNTY 0 BRADFORD CITY 0 - GONE TO EXTRA TIME
90+5min: Duke clings onto Arquinn's powerful header for goal following Sheehan's cross into the box.
90+3min: County squander a truly golden chance to secure their place into Round Two! Duke gets down well low to his left to block an angled drive from Lee Hughes, but the rebound falls invitingly for Arquinn, who is unmarked and positioned barely yards in front of an open goal. Despite the golden opportunity, Arquinn seems to snatch at the chance as the ball bounces up off his leg and onto the crossbar before Duke can get up and gleefully gather.
90min: There will be FIVE minutes added on the end of the second period.
89min: The resulting free-kick sees Bialkowski scramble across his goal to stop a deflected effort from Jones creeping in at his near post. Wells tries to force home from the corner that follows but the County shot-stopper eventually manages to dives on the ball.
88min: YELLOW CARD - Jeff Hughes is the next player in referee Mr Deadman's book after tripping in Reid while the winger was in full flow and surging towards County's penalty area.
82min: YELLOW CARD - Stephen Darby is booked for having hold of Judge as County tried to spring forward on a quick break.
80min: Atkinson lashes well wide of goal with a strike on his weaker left foot from just outside the area after a City throw-in into the box and broken out to him.
79min: SUB - County bring on Jeff Hughes for Mahon.
75min: YELLOW CARD - Sheehan is booked for dragging back Baker as the pair contest the ball just inside County's own half.
74min: SUB - Adam Baker is brought on for Thompson in a straight swap.
70min: Hanson is agonisingly close to connecting with a fizzing cross from Reid! City's flying left winger whips over a teasing ball but it proves merely inches too high for his team-mate in the middle. Hanson was positioned right in front of goal and just outside the six yard box, so any connect there really would have tested Bialkowski.
68min: Arquinn sends a looping header well wide of Duke's goal following Sheehan's curling cross into the box.
67min: Bencherif lines up for a thunderous free-kick from around 30 yards out but his eventual effort sails comfortably wide of Duke's goal.
63min: YELLOW CARD - Garry Thompson is booked for a foul on Sheehan. It didn't seem much but perhaps could have been for a totting up of a number of minor offences by the City right winger during this afternoon's play so far.
61min: SUB - Shortly afterwards, City bring on Nahki Wells for Connell.
61min: SUB - Joss Labadie is brought off for Francois Zoko by County.
60min: YELLOW CARD - Regan is booked for dragging back Reid as the winger threatened to go, not for the first time this afternoon, on a lung-bursting run forward.
57min: City's giant number nine is back up and running soon afterwards, however, and play can now continue.
56min: Hanson is now down receiving a spot of treatment from City physio Matt Barras after seeming to take a whack to his leg while challenging for the ball with Sheehan.
52min: Hanson arches back to connect with a clipped cross into the box by Reid but his looping header drops over Bialkowski's goal.
49min: Reid thrusts over a powerful cross that Bialkowski has to actually dive across and punch clear to stop from dropping in.
46min: After picking up a loose ball around 30 yards from goal, Jones drives forward before fizzes a low strike a good yard or so wide of Bialkowski's far post.
46min: The Bantams restart the tie.
HT: NOTTS COUNTY 0 BRADFORD CITY 0
45+2min: YELLOW CARD - Will Atkinson is booked for a late tackle on Sheehan out by City's right flank.
45min: Four minutes to be added on at the end of the first period.
45min: County threaten again when Sheehan burst into the box before thumping a low drive against Duke's near post. The rebound falls back into the left back's path but his second effort loops over.
44min: Oh for close for County! Sheehan's far post centre is turned back across goal by Judge for the lurking Yoann Arquinn. The County striker's first time shot is well-struck and right in front of goal, but Duke just manages to get enough of a leg on the effort to narrowly turn it around the post.
41min: SUB - After a few minutes of treatment, Smith is eventually taken off and replaced by Hamza Bencherif. Smith is actually stretchered off the pitch as he is substituted but, thankfully, he appears to be concious as he goes down the tunnel.
38min: Smith is down at the moment receiving treatment after appearing to take a whack to his head.
31min: After a City free-kick eventually breaks out to him, Reid cuts inside onto his favoured left foot before fizzing in a powerful effort from around 20 yards out that whistles only a few inches over the bar.
25min: Following County's first real sustained period of pressure in the game, Duke has to tip over a fierce drive from distance by Alan Judge.
22min: Gary Jones shows great bravery to dive in front of a thumping drive from Gavin Mahon just inside City's area after a half-cleared County corner had fallen into his path. The strike could very well have caused Matt Duke some concerns had Jones not got out to block it.
19min: Great opportunity for City! Hanson gets in behind County's defence around 25 yards out after Emmanuele Smith had mis-controlled a backward pass from team-mate Carl Regan. Hanson eventual shot from inside the area lacks the power and placement to beat Bialkowski, however, and the home 'keeper manages to repel the attack.
11min: Reid drives forward after picking up a loose County pass around 40 yards out. After turning past a couple of home defenders, the flying winger eventually shoots for goal from the edge of County's penalty area but his low strike is simple enough for Bialkowski
6min: First chance of the match falls to City as Alan Connell sees his flick for goal from a Kyel Reid cross deflected a few inches past Bartosz Bialkowski's near post. City force two corners in total from their brief spell of pressure but County are eventually able to clear.
0min: County kick off the tie - City's 2012/2013 campaign is under way!
