Leeds-born, Tom made his League debut in the 1-0 defeat by Preston North End at Deepdale in April 2003.
Towards the end of the following season he was given, and gratefully took the opportunity under Bryan Robson for a place in the starting line-up and has proved that he is fully capable of holding his own on the field.
But in four more seasons, Penford found first team opportunities difficult to come by and had made just 23 first team appearances in five seasons by the end of the 2006/2007 season.
However determined not to be left in the doldrums of reserve team football, Penford forced his way back into the first team the following season under new manager Stuart McCall and celebrated with his first ever goal in senior football, scoring in the Bantams 3-1 victory at promotion-chasing Darlington in March 2008.
