Parkin: No change of plan

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

Assistant boss Steve Parkin says that the Bantams' pre-match preparations for this Saturday's Bristol Rovers match has not been affected or altered by the arrival of new Pirates boss Mark McGhee.

City travel to the Memorial Stadium this weekend for McGhee's first home game in charge of the Gloucestershire club following an impressive 2-0 win at promotion-chasing Cheltenham Town on his debut as boss last weekend.

That praiseworthy result for the Pirates at Whaddon Road would suggest that Rovers will have a spring in their step when City arrive at their door, but Parkin feels the Bantams will be ready for whatever McGhee's side can throw at them.

Parkin said: "We have prepped up on their team as normal and we will have prepared for this match as normal.

"Obviously, Mark has come in and seems to have given them a bit of a boost. They got a great result at Cheltenham, so they'll be full of confidence going into the match.

"We will be too though, and we have to make sure we are mentally and physically ready for the challenges Mark's side will throw at us.

"It will be a good test for us, but it is one that I believe we are more than capable of coping with now.

"There is a lot of strength in depth in the squad and a lot of strength of character in the squad, and we do look like winning football matches on a regular basis now.

"That's important for us to take positive vibes like that into the weekend."

The match at Bristol Rovers kicks off a period for City which sees their next six away games, including the Pirates match, all comfortably fit into the 'long distance' bracket.

Following the trip to the Memorial Stadium, the Bantams then face matches at AFC Wimbledon, Torquay United, Barnet, Dagenham and Redbridge and Aldershot Town in the next seven weeks or so.

While some clubs may see this extra travelling as massive burden though, Parkin feels, as long as the preparation is right, City should have no reason to dread their forthcoming motorway journeys.

"As long as you get the preparation right, the eating times, the travelling times, rest times etc, I don't think the players mind the long distance journeys," Parkin added.

"They are part of the game, and they at least give us a good opportunity to get the lads under one roof the night before a game.

"We have a number of long games coming up, but I think they are games we should all look forward to.

"The group of players we have now shouldn't fear anyone in this division, so we look forward to the games ahead and feel ready to take them on one at a time."

The Bantams' match with the Pirates will be only their second league away game of 2012, following a 3-0 reversal at the hands of Rotherham United at the very start of the month.

Before the Rotherham result though, City ended their 2011 matches on the road with commendable performances at high-flying Southend United and Gillingham.

Parkin hopes City will be able to pick up that form once again when they arrive at the Memorial Stadium this weekend.

"The spirit amongst the boys and the spirit in the camp were good for those games," Parkin added.

"The determination and desire on the pitch shown by the players in recent away fixtures has been good and we'll be demanding that again from the players this Saturday.

"I feel even the first half at Rotherham I though we were the better side.

"While we weren't great, probably because we'd only had one day's rest following the Shrewsbury Town match, I felt we probably deserved to just be ahead at half time in that game."
