Penalty heartache for McLaughlin

Posted on: Wed 08 Jul 2009

Bantams shot stopper Jon McLaughlin suffered penalty misery as Great Britain crashed to defeat at the hands of Ukraine in the Semi Final of the World Student Games.

After successfully negotiating the previous round against France via the drama of spot kicks, McLaughlin & his Great Britain team mates were this time on the wrong end of a 6 - 5 penalty shootout defeat.

Before the tension of penalties, Great Britain and Ukraine had battled to a goal-less draw, helping to keep a personal record for McLaughlin intact.

Since the 39th minute of Britain's opening match, the Bantams keeper has yet to concede in open play - a run that spreads over 3 and a half matches in the tournament which is being held in Belgrade, Serbia.

This agonising defeat means instead of going for Gold against Italy in the final, Great Britain will play Japan in the Bronze Medal match on Friday 10th July.
