Promotion 1999 look back: Part 2
Following on from the Wolves 1999: Where are they now? article on www.bradfordcityfc.co.uk, we now continue our look back at the club's Premiership promotion season of 1998/99.
Although the fixture with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday 9th May 1999 will go down as one of the club's biggest matches of all time, it was the whole season of course that earned the Bantams their amazing end of season success.
A season's success obivously requires a strong and reliable squad. In this part of our promotion 1999 look back, we look at the Bantams players who may not have been involved in the titantic tussle at Molienux, but no doubt played a crucial part in the club's rise to the Premier League.
Andrew O'Brien
Following the club's promotion to the top flight, O'Brien quickly established himself as first team regular along side new recruit David Wetherall. O'Brien's continued good form throughout 2000/2001 season caught the attention of Newcastle United. The Magpies splashed out around £2 million pounds for O'Brien's services in March 2001, ironically one of his first matches being at Valley Parade. O'Brien's time at Newcastle was highly satisfying, including one eventful campaign in the Champions League in particular. O'Brien's four year stay at St James Park ended when Alan Perrin at Portsmouth secured his signature for £ 2million pounds. The stay at Fratton Park for O'Brien lasted only two seasons before he moved on to Bolton Wanderers in 2007. Andy O'Brien remains at the Reebok Stadium.
Ashley Westwood
Promotion to the Premiership meant a severe restriction of appearances for Ashley Westwood. Westwood moved to Sheffield Wednesday in 2000 in a bid to search out more first team opportunities for himself. Three years at Sheffield Wednesday followed until Westwood moved on to Northampton. Various injuries for Westwood meant only 31 appearances for him in three years at Sixfields. In 2006 Westwood was on the move again as he joined Chester City. Injuries continued to haunt Westwood during his two year spell at Chester. Various short spells at Stevenage Borough, Crewe Alexandra followed before former City player Dean Saunders brought Westwood to Wrexham.
Isaiah Rankin
Finding first team options hard to come by, Rankin went out on loan to Birmingham City & Bolton Wanderers in 2000. The following year saw Rankin leave to club permanently when he joined Barnsley. Three steady seasons followed at Oakwell, until a loan move at Grimsby Town was made permanent during the 2003/04 season. Rankin's stay at Blundell Park only lasted until the end of the season as he decided not to renew his contract with the mariners in favour off a move to Brentford. After two uneventful seasons at Griffin Park, Rankin decided to return north to Grimsby Town. Rankin struggled for regular first team starts during his season spell at Blundell Park and in January 2008 his contract was terminated by mutual consent. A short spell at Stevenage Borough was followed by a move to Crawley for Rankin.

Mark Prudhoe
Prudhoe was not with the club when the Bantams played their first Premiership fixture against Middlesbrough as he secured a move to Southend United in the summer of 1999. Prudhoe's stay at Roots Hall only lasted one season and six appearances. A move back to Valley Parade followed for a couple seasons in a emergency goalkeeper/coaching capacity for Prudhoe. Prudhoe rounded off his playing career with a short spell at Macclesfield Town before announcing his retirement. In 2005 Prudhoe was appointed as Hull City's goalkeeping coach. Prudhoe has stayed with the Tigers throughout their rise through the leagues and he currently still holds the same position with the Premiership club.
Lee Todd
Summer signings of Gunnar Halle and Andy Myers meant full back Lee Todd would always be struggling for first team starts during City's Premiership campaign. This lack of first team football resulted in a move to Rochdale for Todd. In Todd's three seasons at Spotland, he made over 50 appearances and three goals for Rochdale. Todd left Rochdale in 2003 for a short period at non-league side Mossley. Todd's stay at Mossley in fact only lasted for month before signing for Stalybridge Celtic.
