FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON 1st Round
Bradford City 1 (Carson 20)
Scunthorpe United 0
Kick Off: 7.00pm
at the Coral Windows Stadium

Bradford City Youth booked their place in the 2nd Round of the F.A Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON after securing a hard fought 1 - 0 victory over their counterparts from Scunthorpe United at the Coral Windows Stadium.

Several of Casper's side have had the luxury of reserve team experience this season under their belts and were in a confident mood coming off a morale boosting victory over Mansfield Town last time out in the league.

That confidence clearly transcended onto the pitch as the Bantams made the most of the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute through a Rory Carson free kick.

It was Carson himself who won the free kick after his marauding run was halted on the edge of the Scunthorpe penalty area. Carson dusted himself down and slotted the resulting free kick into the bottom corner and past the despairing dive of Hyslop in the Scunthorpe goal.

As the half wore on Scunthorpe managed to impose themselves more on the match, but struggled to make Bantams keeper Chris Elliott's life too strenuous as his side held onto their lead at half time.

That all changed in the second half as Elliott was forced into a brilliant save by Scunthorpe's giant centre half Jake Picton. A long throw in by fellow centre half Canavan caused danger in the Bradford area and Picton was given the freedom to place a looping header that looked destined for the top corner until Elliott clawed the effort away at the last moment.

Moments later, Bradford counter attacked on their opponents with a break away raid that surely would have led to a second Bradford but for a crucial last ditch tackle by Scunthorpe's Jack Cross on Bradford attacker Ryan Newton. This attack and counter attack play from both teams seemed to sum up the general flow of the game at the start of the second period.

Scunthorpe went agonisingly close to an equaliser mid way through the second half when Niall Canavan thundered a header against Elliott's post from close range after connecting with a Rory Coleman corner.

As the minutes ticked by, Scunthorpe's efforts to find that equaliser became more and more frentic. Scunthorpe mounted the almost customary late pressure to try and force extra time but ultimately it was Carson's first half strike that booked Bradford a place in the 2nd Round of the F.A Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON and a trip to either Shrewsbury Town or Chesterfield.
