City will be entitled to a compensation fee from Barnet after they snapped up teenager Luke Medley.

The 19-year-old striker rejected an offer of a new deal from the Bantams.

Medley scored twice last season from nine appearances, eight of them as a substitute.

"If players want to stay here they will," said McCall while talking to the Telegraph & Argus.

"Luke has got potential but he's only a young kid and sometimes it can be hard going being a long way from home.

"I know he was keen to get back to London, so it was no surprise that he's gone there. He will be happier close to his friends and family.

"The only disappointing thing is that he never spoke to me about it but I can understand his reasons for going."

Eddie Johnson, released by McCall in May, has turned down a two-year deal with Chester.

He has opted for a short-term offer from a League One club - thought to be Crewe, where he played before joining City.
